Wordorigins.org is devoted to the origins of words and phrases, or as a linguist would put it, to etymology. Etymology is the study of word origins. (It is not the study of insects; that is entomology.) Where words come from is a fascinating subject, full of folklore and historical lessons. Often, popular tales of a word’s origin arise. Sometimes these are true; more often they are not. While it can be disappointing when a neat little tale turns out to be untrue, almost invariably the true origin is just as interesting.

Wordorigins.org focuses on word and phrase origins and the history of the English language, but from time to time expands into discussions about language in general. The site primarily deals with English and those languages that have influenced the development of the English language.

This is the list of word and phrase origins contained on this site. The words and phrases are selected because their origins are inherently interesting or because some bit of folklore, sometimes true and sometimes false, is associated with the origin. The etymologies of common words with straightforward explanations can be found in any good dictionary and, for the most part, I do not attempt to reproduce them here. Many of the words have been added as a result of questions or suggestions from readers of the site. So, if you want to know the origin of a specific word or phrase, use the contact form to send in a request.

A Historical Linguistics Lexicon, version 1.0

The following is a lexicon of terms commonly found in discussions of historical linguistics. It is not meant to be comprehensive, and there are many terms that could be included but have not been. The list focuses on English, but most of the terms and concepts can be applied to many languages.
