These large shrubs or semi-climbing roses raiesed in the early nineteenth century, were said to be derived from "R. pendulina" x "R. chinensis", but their chromosome number suggests that either "R. majalis" or "R. blanda" were used, not "R. pendulina" proper. "R. blanda" has also been used to breed thornless roses in the USA.

"China roses" had been cultivated and new varieties produced on a large scale in China for many centuries before the first were brought to gardens in Europe in 1792.

The dwarf, perpetual-flowering "Chinas" were mutants of the climber "R. chinensis", some possibly hybridized with "R. x odorata". This mutation has been observed in cultivation with "Little White Pet" being a dwarf perpetual-flowering sport of "Felicite et Perpetue". The original introductions from China were "Slaters Crimson", China introduced in about 1792, and "Parsons Pink China", now called "Old Blush", in 1793. The original Chinas are dwarf, Up to 2 m, but usually around 1 m, and rather tender with red or pink single or loosely double flowers. ...
"Climbing Roses" (See also "Ramblers") (See Catalogue)

Many roses are natural climbers, and several of those e.g. "R. gigantea", "R. chinensis" and "R. moschata" are important ancestors of modern roses. Furthermore, it has been noted that the gene for climbing is dominant over the dwarf (or bush) gene. Therefore it is not surprising to find many climbing "Hybrid Teas" and "Floribundas"; some of them arose as seedlings, others as sports of normal roses, such as "Climbing Iceberg". Many of these climbing sports are summer flowering only, others have some later flowers. More recent large-flowered climbers, many raised by McGredy, are regularly repeat flowering.

"Tea Roses" (See "Old Roses")

The "Tea rose", "Rosa x odorata", is a hybrid between "R. gigantea" and "R. chinensis", that occurred long ago in China, and many varieties were cultivated there. Two of these were introduced to Europe: the pale pink "Humes Blush" tea-scented China (1809) and "Parks Yellow" tea-scented China (1824), but unfortunately neither is now in cultivation in Europe. Their progeny, however, have survived, and a whole class of "Tea roses" was bred from them, by crossing with "Bourbons" and "Noisettes", These, when crossed with "Hybrid Perpetuals", became "Hybrid Teas".

Tea roses are generally either climbers or small, sparse bushes, with a continuous succession of large flowers of great beauty, in shades of pink, buff or light yellow. They have few thorns and are rather tender (American hardiness zone VIT), growing best around the Mediterranean, in California and in Australia.

The Far East was the birthplace of the Modern Garden Rose at the end of the eighteenth century, with the discovery of R. chinensis in China. The revolutionary characteristic of this rose is its ability to flower repeatedly from early summer to late autumn. The crusaders returned to the west with rose plants, which were then cultivated by monks for their medicinal properties. Rose water was claimed to cure all kinds of ailments, such as trembling, constipation, drunkenness, skin and throat infections and insomnia.

Fu nel XIX secolo che dall’Oriente arrivarono nuove rose che modificarono l’evoluzione del genere:

"Rosa chinensis" e la sua varietà "Rosa chinensis “Semperflorens”", l’ibrido naturale e rifiorente "Bourbon" e l’ibrido "Rosa x odorata" (probabilmte ottenuto dall’incrocio tra "R. chinensis" e "R. gigantea"), denominato "Rosa Tea" per la somiglianza del suo profumo con quello delle foglie del tè. È stato dall’incrocio fra "Rosa Tea" e gli ibridi rifiorenti che si sono ottenuti gli "ibridi di Tea" [Teehybride], diffusi in modo particolare nel nostro secolo. Il primo ibrido creato probabilmente fu "La France" (Guillot 1867), dai fiori profumati, di colore rosa argentato, con i petali esterni ricurvi e a margini ondulati e quelli centrali appuntiti. La varietà "Paquerette", del 1875, rappresenta la capostipite del gruppo delle "Rose Polyanta" [Polyantarose], al quale in seguito si aggiunsero il gruppo degli "Ibridi Floribunda" [Floribundahybride] (Catherine Kordes - Germania), le "Rose Fees" [Märchenrose] (rose in miniatura), "Rose rampicanti" [Kletterrose] e "Rose sarmentose" [Bodendeckerrose ?] e le "Rose a cespuglio" [Strauchrosen] moderne.

In China werden al sinds eeuwen rozen geteeld en gekruist tot nieuwe cultivars. De eerste Chinese rozen kwamen in onze streken toe in het jaar 1792. De "Rosa chinensis" multipetala die nog steeds op de prinsenhof staat,is één van de eersten die door de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie vanuit China werden vervoerd - naar de overlevering wil - op speciaal verzoek van prins-bisschop de Velbrück. Daarnaast vind je uit die tijd ook nog "Rosa indica rubra" en een ‘Old Blush’ op de prinsenhof terug.

Op het eiland Bourbon, een belangrijke aanlegplaats voor de handelsschepen - halfweg op de route tussen Europa en het verre Oosten, ontmoetten leden van de familie van de Herst-Damascenerroos in de 17de eeuw de Chinese roos ("Rosa chinensis"). Uit de noodzakelijke kruisingen die hieruit volgden ontstond de Bourbon-roos, die later werd veredeld door kruisingen met Gallica- en Damascener-hybriden. De familie van de Bourbonrozen kent een goede herbloei in de nazomer. De bloemen zijn vaak half-gevuld en licht-rose. In de tuin van Hex vind je ze voornamelijk in de buurt van de tennis-court verzameld: Mme. Isaac Pereire, Louise Odier, La reine Victoria en anderen.

Dans cette catégorie on trouve aussi "Rosa gallica" connue depuis l'Antiquité et "Rosa chinensis" à l'origine des hybrides cultivés, des lianes comme "Rosa banksiae" ou "Rosa gigantea", ou encore des grands buissons comme "Rosa moschata", "Rosa multiflora" ou "Rosa rugosa" si apprécié pour son beau feuillage rugueux et sa rusticité.

- Les rosiers de Chine :

Les descendants de "Rosa chinensis" sont des buissons ou de petits grimpants assez sensibles au froid. Cependant dans de bonnes conditions, leurs fleurs s'épanouissent pendant la majeure partie de l'année. Hormis l'exceptionnel "Rosa chinensis mutabilis" leur coloris varie du rouge cerise cramoisi au rose pâle. La silhouette est aérée, les tiges souples et fines. Le feuillage vert, allongé, est légèrement brillant.

- Les rosiers Thé :

"Rosa x odorata", l'ancêtre des "rosiers Thé", est un hybride entre "Rosa chinensis" et "Rosa gigantea". Elle a transmis à sa descendance sa floraison remontante, des tons roses ou parfois jaune pâle, un caractère grimpant, mais aussi une faible rusticité. Les fleurs solitaires étant portées par des tiges souples, le port de l'arbuste est léger.

Les "rosiers Thé", buissons ou petits grimpants, furent très cultivés sur la Riviera au début du siècle dernier en raison de leur floraison presque continuelle au soleil. Ils sont aussi très présents en Californie et en Australie

- Les "rosiers Bourbons" ("Rosa chinensis" et "Rosa damascena semperflorens")

Remarqué dans l'île Bourbon (île de la réunion) au début du XIXème siècle, "Rosa x borboniana" le premier "rosier Bourbon", était un rosier aux fleurs semi-doubles, rose vif, parfumées. Ses descendants croisés avec des "rosiers Galliques" ou de "rosiers Damas", sont très rustiques. D'autres issus de "R. x odorata" ont donné naissance à de nombreux "hybrides de Thé" remontants roses.

Der Ferne Osten ist die Heimat der öfter blühenden Rosen. In Indien, China und Japan sind Rosenkulturen seit Jahrtausenden bezeugt. Die intensiv rot und bis in den Herbst blühende "Rosa chinensis" kam erst im 17. Jahrhundert auf den neuen Handelswegen und durch Pflanzenjäger direkt nach Europa. Ihr intensives Rot und ihre lange Blütezeit löste dort ungläubiges Staunen aus. Durch Züchtung brachte sie den eher gedämpften Farben der Rosen Mitteleuropas Leuchtkraft. Auch die gelben Farbtöne gehen auf die Wildrosen des Fernen Ostens zurück.

Anders sieht es bei den "Moschushybriden" aus, die um die Jahrhundertwende von dem englischen Pfarrer Pemberton entdeckt und von seinen Verwandten weitergezüchtet wurden. Sie sind sehr remontierend, das heißt, sie blühen mehrmals pro Jahr. Diese Rosen sind Abkömmlinge von "Rosa multiflora", "Rosa x noisettiana" und "Rosa chinensis". Die Einkreuzung der namensgebenden "Rosa moschata" (der "Moschusrose") liegt bereits sehr lange zurück. Auf einem tiefen und nährstoffreichen Boden weisen diese Hybriden die besten Eigenschaften auf.

Zur Sektion der "Synstylae" zählt auch eine Gruppe von Rosen, die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand: die "Polyantharosen" und ihre Hybriden, die "Floribundarosen". Mit ihrer reichen und wiederholten Blüte kommen sie den Bedürfnissen des modernen Gartenbaus entgegen. Die "Polyantharosen" sind das Ergebnis einer Kreuzung von "Rosa multiflora" mit "Rosa chinensis". Die niedrigen Büsche tragen in Büscheln angeordnete Blüten, die sich den ganzen Sommer über immer wieder erneuern. Eine der allerersten Polyanthas hieß ‘Mignonnette’ und wurde 1880 von Guillot Fils gezüchtet. Zahlreiche Hybriden folgten, so die immer noch sehr gerne angepflanzte ‘The Fairy’. Im 20. Jahrhundert entstanden durch Kreuzung der "Polyanthas" mit "Teehybriden" die "Floribunda". Diese Rosenbüsche, die den Polyantharosen ähneln, tragen größere Blüten. In modernen Parkanlagen setzen sie großflächige Farbakzente.

Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts brachten botanikbegeisterte Reisende die ersten Exemplare aus China mit: "Rosa x odorata", später die gelbe "Rosa x odorata ochroleuca" und "Rosa gigantea". Aus diesen Sorten, die lange, dünne Triebe bilden, gingen die Teerosen hervor. Unter der Bezeichnung "Rosa chinensis" werden sowohl ursprüngliche als auch eine große Zahl von Zuchtsorten zusammengefaßt.

Die Ur-Rosen

Die historische Entwicklung der Rose ist spannend, und mancher Strauch im Garten erhält eine besondere Aura, wenn man seine Geschichte kennt. Man sagt, daß in „vorgeschichtlicher Zeit“ in Indien die "Rosa moschata" (die "Moschusrose") gezüchtet wurde - begehrt wegen ihres Dufts bis ins 17. Jahrhundert hinein. Die "Rosa richardii", die heilige Rose von Abessinien, ein überhängender Strauch mit hellrosa Blüten und schwarzen "Hagebutten", ist wahrscheinlich ähnlich betagt. Doch die bedeutendste Stammutter der europäischen Rosen ist die "Rosa gallica". Sie stammt aus dem Kaukasus, besitzt einzelne, duftende Blüten, dunkelgrünes Laub, wenige Stacheln und bildet rundliche Büsche. Sie wurde in Griechenland, Persien und Rom angebaut, ihre Samen treiben gut aus und man vermutet heute sogar, daß sie Anteile an den "Rosa chinensis-Hybriden" hat, die im 18. Jahrhundert die europäische Rosenzucht revolutionierten.

Die Chinarose

Die "Rosa chinensis" (manchmal auch "Rosa sinica" oder "Bengalrose" genannt) blüht am einjährigen Trieb und setzt deshalb während der ganzen Vegetationsperiode eines Jahres neue Blüten an. Dafür ist sie frostempfindlicher als ihre europäischen Schwestern, und ihr fehlt der betörende Duft. Unter dem Namen ‘Parson’s Pink China’ oder ‘Old Blush’ kamen 1752 Chinahybriden von Kanton nach Europa.

Die "Rosa chinensis" "Semperflorens" erreichte England 1793 und wurde "Slater’s Crimson" genannt. Sie reizte die Züchter durch ihre tief blutrote Farbe. "Hume’s Blush Tea-scented China" ("Rosa x odorata"), 1809 von Sir Abraham Hume, und die goldgelbe "Park’s Yellow Tea-scented China" ("Rosa x odorata ochroleuca"), 1824 von dem Pflanzenjäger A. D. Parks eingeführt, sind die beiden anderen "Chinarosen", die entscheidende Veränderungen auslösten. Der Botaniker C. C. Hurst wies 1920 durch genetische Untersuchungen nach, daß alle "Remontant-Rosen" und modernen "Edel-Rosen" und "Floribunda-Rosen" auf diese vier chinesischen Rosen zurückzuführen sind. Seine Theorie ist nicht widerlegt worden.

„Alte Rosen“

Vier der vielen auf "Chinahybriden" zurückzuführenden Rosensorten werden als eigene Arten behandelt:

Die "Bourbonrose" ist eine zufällige Kreuzung einer "Rosa x damascena" mit einer "Rosa chinensis" auf der Insel Bourbon (heute Réunion) - sie ist die Mutter so entzückender Nachkommen wie der "Souvenir de la Malmaison".

Die "Portlandrose", von der man annimmt, daß sie eine "China-Damascena-Gallica-Hybride" ist, wurde um 1800 von der Herzogin von Portland in England angebaut und ist durch französische Züchter zur Stammutter vieler Sorten geworden, z. B. der prächtigen "Comte de Chambord". Die Einordnung der "Rose de Resht" als Portlandrose wird angezweifelt, da sie nachweislich aus dem Iran gekommen ist; ihr Wuchs und die wiederholte Blüte sprechen allerdings für diese Zuordnung.

Die "Noisetterose" stammt aus Nordamerika und geht wahrscheinlich auf eine Kreuzung von "Rosa chinensis x Rosa gigantea" mit einer "Rosa moschata" zurück. Zu ihnen gehören die zartblütigen Kletterrosen in hellen Farben, wie "Aimée Vibert", die besonders in Frankreich zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts gezüchtet wurden.

Die vierte, allerdings ziemlich unbedeutende Gruppe bilden die "Boursault-Rosen". Ein französischer Züchter nannte sie so zu Ehren eines Rosensammlers, der im Paris in den zwanziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts berühmt war. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Kreuzung zwischen "Rosa pendulina" und einer "Rosa chinensis". Sie zeichnen sich durch ihre rötlichen Triebe ohne Stacheln aus und blühen sehr früh. Im Herbst ist ihr lockeres Laub oft gefärbt. Eine schöne Vertreterin ist die "Kletterrose" "Mme Sancy de Parabère".

"Rosa chinensis minima" wird als Ursprung der "Miniaturrosen" angenommen; sie ist um 1800 nach Europa gekommen, aber erst ab 1918 durch die Arbeit spanischer und Schweizer Züchter als eine neue Klasse anerkannt worden. 1919 kam durch Kreuzungen von Hybriden mit "Rosa arvensis" und "Rosa wichuraiana" die erste "Bodendeckerrose" auf den Markt. Für die Entwicklung der Rosen ist am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts noch die Züchtung der sogenannten "Englischen Rosen" bemerkenswert. Seit den sechziger Jahren gibt es eine Reihe von Kreuzungen moderner Rosen mit einmalblühenden, duftenden Rosen früherer Jahrhunderte. Sie bieten eine umfassende Farbpalette, blühen wiederholt im Jahr, sind frostfest und verhältnismäßig krankheitsresistent - und vor allem duften sie. Sind die Möglichkeiten der Rosengeschichte damit erschöpft?

TEEROSEN

Ebenfalls aus China kamen 1808 "Hume’s Blush Tea-Scented China" oder "Rosa x odorata" (ein niedriger, wiederholt blühender Strauch) und 1824 "Park’s Yellow Tea-Scented China" oder "Rosa x odorata" "Ochroleuca" (ein einmal blühender, kletternder Strauch). Beide kamen aus den Fa Tee oder Fa Ti Gärtnereien bei Kanton und dufteten stark. Sie sollen ebenfalls von "Rosa chinensis" und "Rosa gigantea" abstammen. Aus der Kreuzung dieser beiden Rosen entstanden die "TEEROSEN".

Es gibt niedrige und kletternde Teerosen. Das Laub ist weich und leicht glänzend. Wenige Stacheln. Knospen spitz. Blüten fast immer gefüllt, meist etws hängend. Blütenfarbe Rosa, Hellgelb bis Apricot, selten Rot (bei späteren Kreuzungen mit Bourbonrosen u.a.). Guter “Teerosen”-Duft. Gutes Remontieren. Wuchs oft zierlich, empfindlich gegen Kälte, Wind und Nässe - im warmem Klima gut.

Die Zwergrosen (Zw)

"Miniaturrosen" oder "Lilliputrosen" werden zumeist in den Rosenkatalogen unter der Überschrift "Zwergbengalrosen" aufgeführt. Da es sich um Abkömmlinge der "Rosa chinensis Jacq" "Minima" handelt, wäre der richtige Name "Zwergchinarosen". Sie stammen von der Urzwergrose "Pompon de Paris" (1839 oder 1823) ab, die, um 1910 wiederentdeckt, unter dem Namen Rosa "Rouletti" in den Handel gebracht wurde. "Rosa Rouletti" blüht hellrosa und wird bis zu 60 cm hoch. Die Züchtungen der letzten Jahre ergaben eine Anzahl sehr hübscher Sorten, die meistens nur Höhen von 20-30 cm erreichen und ganz entzückende Blüten tragen. Bei einigen Sorten sehen die Blüten genau wie kleine Minirosen aus. Diese "Minirosen" blühen in vielen Farben. Einen reizenden Anblick bieten sie, wenn recht buschig wachsende Sorten auf 30 cm hohe Stämmchen veredelt wurden.

Ist von Zwergröschen die Rede, dürfen auch die sogenannten "Kußröschen" nicht unerwähnt bleiben.

1752 gelangte die erste Chinarose "Rosa chinensis 'Major'" nach Europa. Die Chinarosen bestachen durch zwei Vorzüge. Sie blühten nicht nur - wie die alten Rosen - einmal im Jahr, sondern den ganzen Sommer bis zum Herbst. Und es gab sie nicht nur in weiß, rosa oder hellrot, sondern auch in gelb und in leuchtendem Zinnoberrot.

Durch Kreuzung zwischen "Rosa multiflora" und "Rosa chinensis" entstanden die "Polyantha-Rosen", durch Kreuzung der "Polyantha" mit "Teehybriden" um 1900 dann die "Floribunda-Rosen". Die nächste Entwicklung zur "Grandiflora-Rose" (heute kaum noch als eigene Klasse erwähnt) vollzog sich 1950 durch Kreuzung einer "Teehybride" mit einer "Floribunda". Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts kam dann die bisher letzte neue Rosenklasse dazu: die "Bodendeckerrosen" ("Kleinstrauchrosen") - nach der Wuchsform benannt.

At the end of the eighteenth century, as "China Roses" were prominently introduced to the West, there was a great revolution in the world of roses. The arrival of the China Roses changed the rose world profoundly. There are many poignant changes that occurred with the introduction of the China Roses including:

A China gene is thought to be responsible for repeatability of bloom. Up until their introduction, the only cultivated roses with any repeat bloom were the Autumn Damasks. The increased productivity of bloom was greatly prized in the gene pool.

The Chinas brought another dimension to the color range in roses. The Chinas have a unique aspect of defying the color principles commonplace with roses before that time. They have the unusual characteristic of darkening with age. Most of the roses up until that time faded with age. A China Rose may open yellow, then blend to crimson through gradations of orange and pink. This is the case with 'Mutabilis'. The Chinas broadened the color range to include shades of yellow and a deep crimson that were not known to European garden roses before that time.

The China Roses broadened the scents of roses. New blends became apparent when the Chinas hybridized with other roses. In A Fragrant Year, Helen van Pelt Wilson and Léonie Bell, state that Chinas are vaguely scented on their own. They remark that they are able to detect the fragrance of nectarine in 'Old Blush'. They go on further to say that 'Old Blush' gave a pepper smell to some of its offspring; in others a fruity smell was heightened. They believe that 'Parson's Pink' and 'Slater's Crimson China' had little scent. The mating with European fragrances produced a pronounced fruity bouquet, notably nectarine or raspberry, that can be found in the Bourbons.

The China Rose brought a change to the form of the flower. The high centered exhibition rose owes its form to the China genes. The China Roses also brought the rose world slender buds that unfurl when opening.

An early botanical specimen of a Crimson China named "Chineeshe Eglantier Roosen" by Gronovius in 1733, was later rendered and named "Rosa chinensis" by Jacquin in 1768. This rose was actually a cultivated variety and not the true species as the name would suggest. Graham Thomas states that our Four Stud Chinas may all be hybrids of the Tea rose, Rosa gigantea, with "Rosa chinensis". He believes that the "Old Blush" and "Slater's Crimson China", also known as "Rosa chinensis" semperflorens are closely related to "Rosa chinensis", whereas "Hume's Blush" and "Parks' Yellow" are more infused with "Tea Rose". ...

N. J. Jacquin (1727-1817) described and illustrated "Rosa chinensis" in 1768. It is not clear from Jacquin’s drawing, which shows a single shoot with a bud, nor from his description, whether the flower of his plant was double or single. The nearest to it which remains in cultivation is probably that now called "Slater’s Crimson China" or "R. semperflorens Curtis", a double deep red repeat-flowering rose, plants of which were brought from China in 1790 and described and illustrated in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine in 1794 (t. 284).
