Old European Roses ("Centifolias", "Gallicas", "Damasks", "Albas" & "Mosses")

The roses here - albas, gallicas, damasks, centifolias and mosses - flourished during the Renaissance. Each type has their individual differences but overall they have similar characteristics. They typically grow into shrubs 4 to 6 feet and bloom once during the spring. They were bred for cool temperatures and harsh winters and most benefit from some afternoon shade in the South. "Madame Plantier", for example, grows and blooms beautifully in my garden with only a few hours of morning sun.

Die Centifolie, plur. die -n, eine Art Gartenrosen, deren Blumenstängel mit kurzen braunen Haaren besetzt sind. Sie hat platte Blumen, welche aus einer großen Menge kurzer dicht in einander gepreßter Blättchen von schöner dunkeler Farbe, aber ohne eine merklichen Geruch, bestehen. Von diesen vielen Blumenblättern hat sie auch den Nahmen; "Rosa centifolia, L."

"Zentifolien", bzw. "Rosa centifolia", werden auch als "Kohl-Rosen" oder "Hundertblättrige Rosen" bezeichnet. Diese Klasse entstand im 16. Jahrhundert in Holland und wurde bis 1850 stetig weiter gezüchtet. Schon damals waren die Menschen von der Vielzahl an Blütenblättern der Rose fasziniert.

Dies brachte ihr nicht selten einen Platz in bekannten künstlerischen Arbeiten ein. Ihre Farbspektren reichen von weiß bis zu einem dunklen Rot. Zentifolien sind wuchsfreudig und besitzen eine gute Winterhärte. Zudem versprühen sie einen meist süßen Duft, dem niemand widerstehen kann.

Questi arbusti rustici, derivati da "R. centifolia", presentano aspetto molto compatto formato da rami spinosi e ricadenti, che portano foglie composte da 5-7 foglioline di colore verde chiaro. Presentano una sola fioritura in giugno, con fiori profumati, doppi e larghi 5 cm. Ne fanno parte:

Hagebutte ("Rosa canina L")

Die Hagebutte ist zu finden in Europa, Nordafrika und Vorder-, sowie in Mittelasien. Der Strauch wächst bis zu 5 Meter hoch und besitzt rosafarbene Blüten. Charakteristisch sind die, nach dem Verblühen nach unten geschlagenen Kelchblätter. Sie werden mit und ohne Kerne verwendet. Von einer anderen Rosen Art, der Essigrose (Rosa centifolia L.), wird aus den Blütenblättern, Rosenöl und Rosenwasser gewonnen. Die Essigrose ist ein niedrig wachsender Strauch, der weit verbreitet kultiviert wird.

Im Volksmund findet der Name Hagebutte doppelte Verwendung. Zum einen für die Frucht und zum anderen für den gesamten Strauch, der Hundsrose (Rosa canina L). Der Strauch gehört der Familie der Rosengewächse an und ist fast überall zu finden.

Botanisches: "Rosa centifolia" ist im Orient heimisch und wohl von Persien und Babylonien über Ägypten nach Altgriechenland und Altitalien gelangt und seitdem in vielerlei Formen gezüchtet worden. Sie bildet einen 1-3 m hohen Strauch mit kahlen, bräunlichen Ästen. Während die jungen grünen Ästchen nur mit kleinen Stacheln besetzt sind, tragen die größeren Zweige zahlreiche stärkere und schwächere Stacheln. Diese sind schwach zurückgebogen, an ihrer Basis breit und seitlich zusammengedrückt. Die Blätter stehen auf drüsig-borstigen Stielen, die fast stachellos sind. Die Blätter sind gefiedert. Die oberen bestehen aus drei, die unteren meist aus fünf, zuweilen aus sieben Blättchen. Diese sind eiförmig oder elliptisch-oval und unterseits weichhaarig. Der Rand ist einfach gesägt und drüsig. Die nickenden Blüten stehen zu zwei bis drei auf ziemlich langen Stielen, die wie der Kelch mit gestielten roten Drüsen besetzt sind. Die Staubgefäße und die äußeren Fruchtblätter sind zu Kronenblättern umgewandelt, wodurch die Blüte "gefüllt" ist. Die Farbe der Blüten ist milchweiß oder rosarot bis purpurrot. Die eiförmigen Scheinfrüchte gelangen meistens nicht zur Ausbildung, da der Unterkelch nach dem Verblühen rasch verwelkt und abfällt. Um den Wohlgeruch der Blüten zu erhöhen, wurde früher neben die Rose Knoblauch gepflanzt. Blütezeit: Juni.

"Rosa damascena" hat im Unterschied zu "R. centifolia" zahlreiche und starke Stacheln, die sich auch an den Blattstielen finden. Ihre Knospen sind länglich, während die der "R. centifolia" eiförmig sind. Die Kelchröhre ist verlängert und die Kelchzipfel sind zurückgeschlagen. Auch sie hat im Orient ihre Heimat.

Geschichtliches und Allgemeines:

Die Kultur der Rose, der Königin der Blumen, wie schon Sappho sie nennt, hat wohl mit den Indogermanen aus deren Urheimat ihren Triumphzug über die Erde angetreten. Unzählige antike Sagen knüpfen sich an ihre Entstehung. Nach einer Überlieferung soll die Rose als Überbleibsel des ersten Morgenrotes auf der Erde zurückgeblieben, nach einer anderen zugleich mit Aphrodite dem Meerschaum entsprossen sein. Jedenfalls hat die Schönheit und Anmut der Blüten schon in ältester Zeit die Bewunderung und Aufmerksamkeit der verschiedenen Völker erregt und auch die Verwendung der Blütenblätter zu kosmetischen, diätetischen und medizinischen Zwecken veranlaßt. In Persien wurden Rosengärten (gulistane) schon im frühesten Altertum gehalten. Chinesische und Sanskrit-Schriften wissen von dem Wohlgeruch der Blüten viel zu berichten, und das durch Vermengung der Blätter mit Fett gewonnene Rosenöl spielte im Religionskultus bei Balsamierungen aller Art eine große Rolle. So berichtet bereits die Ilias, daß Aphrodite den Leichnam Hektors mit Rosenöl salbte. Bei den Ägyptern galten die Rosen als Universalmittel. Herodot, der von einer sechzigblätterigen Rose, vermutlich der "Rosa centifolia", schreibt, rühmt die wundervollen Rosengärten des Königs Midas in Thrakien.

Der Name "Rosa centifolia" findet sich zuerst bei Theophrast und Plinius. Bei den griechischen und römischen Ärzten galten die Rosen als kühlendes und adstringierendes, daher austrocknendes Mittel. Dioskurides empfiehlt die Abkochung der trockenen, in Wein gekochten Blätter gegen Kopf-, Augen-, Ohren-, Zahnfleisch-, After- und Gebärmutterschmerzen und gibt genaue Anweisung zur Herstellung eines Rosenöles (nicht des destillierten Öles, sondern eines stark aromatisierten fetten Öles) und von Rosenpastillen. Nach Celsus wurde das Rosenöl besonders gegen Gebärmutterleiden zur Herstellung von Mutterzäpfchen verwendet. Der arabische Rhazes bezeichnete den Rosenhonig als Antiaphrodisiakum. Der zu Anfang des 12. Jahrhunderts in Konstantinopel lebende Arzt Johannes Actuarius ist einer der ältesten Schriftsteller, der das destillierte Rosenwasser erwähnt. Er empfahl es gegen Augenkrankheiten und den Rosenölzucker als innerliches Hilfsmittel. Eine Abscheidung von Rosenöl und Rosenwasser wurde in Europa erst nach 1580 durch Rossi und Porta bemerkt. Berühmt waren nach Athenaeus die "Rosen von Samos", welche zweimal im Jahre blühten und wohl mit der "Rosa damascena" identisch sind. Bis in das 17. Jahrhundert hat Persien den Handel mit Rosenwasser und Rosenöl beherrscht. Sehr rasch verbreitete sich dann die Rosenkultur und Rosenindustrie nach Indien, Arabien, Tunis, Algier, Marokko, Kleinasien, Bulgarien und nach der Türkei. In Frankreich und Deutschland begann die Kultur der Rosen zur Gewinnung des Öles (von Rosa damascena) erst im 19. Jahrhundert.

Die Blumenblätter von "Rosa centifolia", Petala Rosae centifoliae, die auch heute noch in der Volksheilkunde bei Diarrhöe, Ruhr, Bluthusten und Lungenleiden gebraucht werden, decken hauptsächlich den deutschen medizinischen Bedarf an Rosenblättern, während die Petala Rosae damascenae in Frankreich gebräuchlich sind. Aus den pulverisierten Blütenblättern wird ein Kinderpuder hergestellt.

La "rose aux cent feuilles" est née en Hollande à la fin du 16 ème siècle d'un croisement de "Rosa gallica", "Rosa moschata", "Rosa canima" et "Rosa damascena". Der Phantasie der Natur, die der Rose eine ausgeprägte Neigung zur Bildung von Varietäten mitgegeben hat, und der Phantasie der Züchter scheinen kaum Grenzen gesetzt. Ausgehend von den fünf Urahnen der Rose –

• "Rosa gallica" ("Apothekerrose" oder auch "Essigrose"),
• "Rosa damascena" ("Ölrose"),
• "Rosa centifolia" ("Hundertblättrige Rose" oder auch "Kohlrose"),
• "Rosa alba" ("weiße Rose") und
• "Rosa canina" ("Hundsrose")

– unterscheidet man heute ca. 250 „echte“ Arten. Als „alte Rosen“ bezeichnet man diese fünf mit ihren Varietäten sowie "Moosrosen", "Chinarosen", "Noisetterosen", "Bourbonrosen", "Portlandrosen", "Teerosen" und "Remontantrosen". Als „moderne Rosen“ werden alle nach 1867 – dem Einführungsjahr der legendären „La France“ – gezüchteten Rosen bezeichnet.

Früher glaubte man, daß die duftende Rose von Herodot, von Theophrast und Plinius, "Rosa centifolia" genannt, der Vorläufer unserer Kohlrose war. Inzwischen wissen wir auf Grund der Forschungen von Bunyard und Graham Thomas, daß unsere Rose keineswegs eine Wildrose ist, sondern eine Hybride aus vier verschiedenen Arten: der "Rosa rubra", der "R. phoenicia", der "R. moschata" und der "R. canina".

Zwischen 1580 und 1710 wurde die Kohlrose mit viel Geschick von holländischen Züchtern zu ihrer heutigen Form entwickelt. Robert Furber, der sie in seinem Kalender im Monat Juni vorgestellt hat, nennt sie die „holländische hundertblättrige Rose“. In der Tat hat diese Rose, hier von George Ehret gemalt, ein einzigartiges niederländisches Aussehen. Bunyard sagte, daß die "Centifolia" das Aussehen wohlgenährter niederländischer Bürger hätte. Und der Vergleich einer "Centifolia" mit einer "Damaszener" wäre etwa wie der Vergleich der Malerei eines Frans Hals mit der Fragonards. Die Rose muß aber noch mit dem Namen „Kohlrose“ leben. Doch letztlich kann auch das französische Wort für "Kohl", „chou“, durchaus als Kosewort gebraucht werden. (Gordon, S. 28)

Wer Rosen kennt und liebt, denkt vor allem an die Hoheiten des Duftes, die "Teerosen" mit dem Wohlgeruch Indiens. Wem wäre die rosablühende Moosrose "Rosa centifolia muscosa" nicht bekannt, und in welchem Bauerngarten blühte nicht die gute, vielbewährte, rosafarbene Strauchrose "Centifolia"? Und wer hätte noch nicht von der herrlichen, feinduftenden Rose „Maréchal Niel“ gehört? Und hat nicht in Großmutters Garten das Karmin der „Hugh Dickson“ geleuchtet?

Rosenarten

Die fünf beliebtesten und seit langem bekannten alten Rosenarten sind die weiße "Albarose" ("Rosa alba"), die rote "Essigrose" ("Rosa gallica"), die "Damaszenerrose" ("Rosa damascena"), die "Centifolia" oder "Hundertblättrige Rose" ("Rosa centifolia") und die "Moosrose" ("Rosa muscosa").

Sie alle wurden mindestens seit dem 17. Jahrhundert in europäischen Gärten gezüchtet. Mit Ausnahme der "Rosa damascena", die aus Kleinasien, eingeführt wurde, stammen sie alle aus Europa. Dennoch haben die meisten Menschen, wenn sie an Rosen denken, das Bild einer perfekt geformten Teerosen-Hybride vor Augen. Diese Art wurde 1809 von Sir Abraham Hume aus China nach England gebracht. Sie wurde als Rosa odorata klassifiziert und „Hume’s blush tea-scented China rose“ (rote, nach Tee duftende Chinarose) genannt, weil ihr zarter Duft dem von frischen Teeblättern ähnlich war. Sie wurde so bewundert, daß mit enormem Aufwand zahlreiche Hybriden gezüchtet wurden. 1959 zählte man über 20.000 anerkannte Arten.

Alte Rosen

Einige Rosenliebhaber erinnern sich noch daran: die "Zentifolie" in Großmutters Garten hatte einen Duft, den keine spätere Rose erreichte. Diese "rosa centifolia" gehört zu den lebenden Antiquitäten unter den heutigen Rosen. Rosensorten, die Jahrhunderte oder gar Jahrtausende alt sind, sind seit einiger Zeit wieder im Handel, erleben eine regelrechte Renaissance. Dies verdanken wir Rosenenthusiasten wie Gerda Nissen. Seit den siebziger Jahren ist die Holsteinerin in Norddeutschland unterwegs. Um alte Rosen zu finden, steckt sie mit Armen und Beinen häufig genug im Brombeergestrüpp und Brennesseldickicht. (46)

Aus Zufallskreuzungen dieser Klassen und vielleicht auch durch Selektion in den alten Rosenschulen entstand wahrscheinlich in Holland gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts eine neue, vierte Klasse, nämlich die der "Rosa centifolia". Etwa um dieselbe Zeit taucht in den alten Kräuterbüchern erstmalig die „stachellose Rose“ auf, auch „Francofurtensis“ genannt, vermutlich eine Zufallskreuzung aus der wildwachsenden, damals aber auch in Gärten gehaltenen "Zimtrose" und einer "Gallica-Rose". Sie wurde Stammutter einer fünften Klasse. Und hundert Jahre später brachte die "Zentifolienrose" an Kelch und Blütenstiel bemooste Mutationen hervor. Das war die Geburtsstunde der "Moosrosen-Klasse".

Erste Namensgebung

Bei diesen Auswüchsen dürfen die Ernsthaftigkeit römischer Naturforscher oder die Kunst der Gärtner, zu dieser Zeit einen Rosengarten zu gestalten, nicht in Vergessenheit geraten. Plinius der Ältere (um 23 - 79 n. Chr.) listet bereits zwölf verschiedene Rosenarten auf, unter anderem die "Rose von Prenest", die "Rose von Milet" sowie die "Rose von Karthago". Er ist es auch, der die Vermutung aufstellt, daß England wegen seiner vielen weißen Rosen "Albion" ("albus" bedeutet "weiß") genannt würde. In seiner „Naturalis Historia“ benennt er die "Rosa damascena", "Rosa gallica", "Rosa centifolia" und die berühmte "Rose von Paestum" "Rosa bifera". Plinius der Jüngere (um 62 - ca. 113 n. Chr.) beschreibt seinen eigenen Garten liebevoll: „Im hellen Sonnenschein wachsen Rosen ... Es gibt Rasenflächen, in die runde, lange und gewellte, mit Buchs eingefaßte Blumenbeete eingelassen sind. Buchs ist in Figuren geschnitten, und zwischen ihnen sprudeln Fontänen.“ Die Rose war aber auch die Blume der Toten. Gräber wurden mit ihr geschmückt, und mancher reiche Römer bestimmte testamentarisch den Rosenschmuck für sein Grab. Der Dichter Properz (um 50 - ca. 16 v. Chr.) schrieb: „Wenn jemand meine Gebeine in zarte Rosenblätter legte, würde mir die Erde leicht werden.“

Sicher ist, daß Albertus Magnus (1193-1280), der große Philosoph und Naturforscher, die "Rosa canina", "Rosa centifolia", "Rosa arvensis" und die "Rosa rubiginosa" kannte. Er beschrieb den idealen Garten, sein Schüler Petrus de Crescentiis (1230-1321) verbreitete diese Ideen in ganz Europa. Dieser empfahl den „kleinen“ Leuten, einen Rasenplatz mit einer Rosenhecke und Obstbäumen zu umpflanzen, zwischen denen Wein ranken sollte. Der Dichter Petrarca (1304 - 1374) besaß mehrere Gärten, in denen die Wege immer mit Weinreben überlaubt und von Rosenhecken eingefaßt waren.

Aber auch Holland entwickelt sich allmählich zu einem Zentrum des Rosenanbaus; es werden angeblich über 200 Variationen der "Rosa centifolia" angeboten. 1655 schreibt Adrian van der Donck, daß es in holländischen Gärten viele weiße und rote Rosen gäbe, und Landsleute, die nach Amerika ausgewandert waren, ließen sich Rosen aus der Heimat nachsenden.

In dem Rosengarten der Kaiserin Joséphine in Malmaison sollen um 1800 über 160 verschiedene "Rosa gallica" und 150 verschiedene "Rosa centifolia" geblüht haben. Einige Exemplare stammten aus der Rosenzucht des hessischen Landgrafen Friedrichs II., die er sich 1766 in Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe hatte anlegen lassen. Die Rosen der Kaiserin sind von dem berühmten botanischen Zeichner Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1758-1840) verewigt worden. Aber auch in den Rosengärten des Luxembourg in Paris stieg die Anzahl der Sorten rasant: 2000 sollen es gewesen sein, 30 000 bis 40 000 wilde Rosen wurden veredelt. Ein französischer Katalog von 1829 enthält sogar 2562 verschiedene Rosen, und an der Riviera entsteht ein Rosenrausch wie zu römischen Zeiten: Getreide- und Olivenbaumfelder werden nun für den Rosenanbau genutzt.

Die Hundertblättrige Rose

Auch die "Zentifolien" gehen auf eine "Rosa x damascena" zurück. Man vermutet, daß sie das Ergebnis einer Kreuzung mit einer "Albarose" sind. Da es aber über viele Jahrhunderte verschiedene bewußte und zufällige Kreuzungen gegeben hat, wird die "Rosa centifolia" als eigene Art angesehen. Sie war immer eine Lieblingsrose; da sie überwiegend in der Provence angebaut wurde, nannte man sie "Provence-Rose", aber auch "Rose de Peintres", weil sie auf holländischen Blumenstilleben häufig abgebildet wurde. Eine typische, sehr charmante "Zentifolie" ist ‘Fantin-Latour’. Die kleinen "Burgunderröschen" oder "Pomponrosen" gehören ebenfalls zu den "Zentifolien". Die "Rosa centifolia muscosa" ist eine Mutation, ein sogenannter Sport einer "Zentifolie". Um die Knospe hatte sich ein moosartiger Bewuchs gebildet, der harzig duftete. Diese Sorte kam Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ganz groß in Mode. ‘Old Pink Moss’ oder ‘Nuits de Young’ sind prominente Vertreter der merkwürdigen "Moosrosen".

"Mary Lawrance", "Rosa centifolia muscosa"

Niemand konnte bisher feststellen, warum sich die erste "Kohlrose" so bescheiden im Moos versteckt hatte. Wir wissen, daß sie 1720 im Botanischen Garten in Leiden gezüchtet wurde und 1727 zum erstenmal in England auftauchte, und zwar in Furbers Katalog. Nur wenige Blumenfreunde können dem Reiz dieser hübschen, kleinen Blumen widerstehen. Unserer Großmütter und Urgroßmütter erhielten sie am Valentinstag, klebten Bilder der "Moosrose" in Sammelalben, malten sie mit Wasserfarben und stickten sie mit feiner Wolle je nach Geschick. So reizend die "Moosrose" ist, so hat sie doch auch Nachteile. Einer ist die kurze Blühdauer, obwohl manche Sorten zweimal blühen, und sie ist anfällig für Mehltau. Eine sehr bemerkenswerte "Moosrose" ist die „William Lobb“, 1855 nach dem Gärtner und „Pflanzenjäger“ benannt. Welch würdigeres Denkmal könnte solch einem Mann gesetzt werden, als dieser wunderschönen, violettrosa bis graublauen "Moosrose" seinen Namen zu geben. (Gordon, S. 38)

Rosen in Kunst und Kunsthandwerk

Auf den Wandmalereien im Palast der Kaiserin Livia in Prima Porta vor den Toren Roms ranken hinter einer (gemalten) Sandsteinmauer Büsche mit zarten "Rosa centifolia", unterpflanzt mit Margeriten, und auf den Zweigen sitzen kleine bunte Vögel. Bei den Ausgrabungen in Pompeji hat man vergleichbare Muster zeitgenössischer Gärten freigelegt. Derartige Wandmalereien waren viele Jahrhunderte lang als Abbild der Natur gedacht, so als ob sich das Zimmer im Freien inmitten einer paradiesischen Landschaft befände. Oft wurden am unteren Teil der Wand eine Balustrade oder ein Gitter dargestellt, um einen ganz naturalistischen Ausblick zu suggerieren. Die Wandmalereien im Palazzo Davanzati in Florenz aus dem 14. Jahrhundert sind teilweise von besonderer Raffinesse: Es wird ein blumenreicher Garten gezeigt, mit Vögeln, Schmetterlingen, Springbrunnen und allerlei Zierrat. Bei genauerem Hinschauen sieht man dann, daß diese Szenen in Form eines Wandbehangs gemalt und an der oberen Kante wie mit Bändern an einer Stange befestigt sind. Dahinter ist der dunkle Wald mit Hirschen und Wildschweinen abgebildet. Diese doppelte optische Täuschung durch den Maler, künstliche vor die „wirkliche“ Natur zu hängen, ist voll feiner Ironie. Rosen sind meistens Bestandteil dieser Vorgänger der späteren Tapeten, da sie schon immer Inbegriff vollkommener Gartenkunst gewesen sind.

Blumen-Stilleben

Im 17. Jahrhundert kamen dann Blumenstilleben in Mode, sie sind prächtige Zierstücke, und ihre schönsten Beispiele findet man bei niederländischen Künstlern wie Jan Davidsz de Heem, Jan van Huijsum und Balthasar van der Ast. Aber nicht nur die Pracht, sondern auch die Vergänglichkeit der Blumen wird thematisiert. Symbolhaft werden Totenschädel, die fressende Raupe und entblätterte Rosen als Motive neben die Vasen gelegt. Auf fast allen diesen Bildern ist es eine hellrosa "Rosa centifolia", die füllig und schwer zwischen Iris, Nelken, Vergißmeinnicht und den damals populären Tulpen prangt.

Rosenblätter (flores Rosarum).

Die Blumenblätter von Rosen, welche bei uns kultiviert werden, sind ein nicht unbedeutender, im Droguenhandel zentnerweise vorkommender Artikel. Sie werden von zwei Rosenarten genommen, von der gewöhnlichen "Zentifolie" ("Rosa centifolia") und von der dunkelroten "Damaszenerrose", "Burgunderrose" oder "Essigrose" ("Rosa gallica"); es kommen demnach zwei Sorten von Blättern vor, blasse und rote. Die Zentifolienblätter (flores rosarum incarnatarum oder pallidarum) werden vor der völligen Aufschließung der Blüten abgenommen und entweder rasch in der Sonne getrocknet oder frisch mit Salz eingelegt (flores rosarum in sale). Durch das Trocknen geht ein Teil des Duftes und die reine rote Farbe verloren; der übrig bleibende schwache Geruch ist aber sehr angenehm. Die eingesalznen Blätter behalten ihr Rot; behufs des Einlegens werden sie frisch mit der Hälfte ihres Gewichts Kochsalz gemischt, in Fässer, steinerne Töpfe u. dgl. dicht eingedrückt und verschlossen.

"Rosa centifolia", "Die Hundertblättrige Rose", "Kohl-Rose", "Provence-Rose", "Zentifolie"
Die "Hundertblättrige Rose" ist nicht, wie früher angenommen, schon den alten Griechen und Römern bekannt gewesen; es handelt sich vielmehr um eine komplexe Kreuzung von "R. gallica", "R. moschata", "R. canina" und "R. damascena", die bis Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts in Holland entstanden ist und dort bis etwa 1850 weiterentwickelt wurde.

Ihre unvergleichlich üppigen Blumen fanden rasch Begeisterung, und auf vielen Gemälden der großen flämischen Meister ist sie zu finden. Der Wuchs ist ähnlich "R. gallica", aber höher, und gute Winterhärte zeichnen die "Zentifolien" aus. Die Blätter sind quergerunzelt, grobgesägt und breitrund, die unteren Blattflächen mit feinen, angenehm duftenden Drüsen besetzt. Die Blattstiele sind ohne Stacheln, die Blumenstiele lang und scharf borstig. Die zahlreichen Blüten sind dichtgefüllt und von feinem Weiß, Rosa bis Dunkelrot getönt.

Die "Zentifolien" sind die "Bauernrosen" vergangener Zeiten und noch heute ihrer üppigen Blüten und des süßen Duftes wegen beliebt.

"Rosa Centifolia" - Die "hundertblättrige Rose"

Man nahm an, dass diese Rosenklasse schon den Griechen und den Römern bekannt war. Man behauptet auch, sie sei in Holland entstanden. Sicher ist, dass sie in Holland im 16. Jahrhundert züchterisch stark bearbeitet wurde und von dort aus ihren Siegeszug durch Europa antrat. In dieser Rosenklasse vereinigt sich das Blut von. "R. canina", "R. moschata", "R. gallica", "R. damascena", was an eingen Blüten ganz deutlich zu sehen ist.

Der einstmal berühmte Botanische Garten der Universität Altdorf besass einige Sorten von "Centifolien", denn die Blüten begeisterten nicht nur den Gartenfreund sondern auch den Botaniker. Sie wachsen locker, leicht überhängend und werden bis zu 200cm hoch. "Centifolien" blühen im Juni sehr reichlich. Die Farbpalette reicht von reinem Weiss über zart und kräftig Rosa bis hin zu dunklem Rot. Die unteren Blattflächen sind mit angenehm duftenden Drüsen besetzt, so dass der Strauch auch dann duftet, wenn keine Blüten vorhanden sind. Während der Blüte verströmen sie einen betörend süssen Duft, den sie sicherlich von den "R. moschata"-Eltern mitbekommen haben. Während des Siegeszuges durch Europa fand man sie nicht nur in den Bauerngärten, sondern auch in Schlossgärten und auf den Gemälden berühmter flämischer Meister. Es ist schon etwas Besonderes, die wunderbare Blüte und den einmaligen Duft von "Centifolien" in unserem Garten mitzuerleben und dabei den Klängen schöner Musik zu lauschen.

Die "Hundertblättrige Rose" ist gegen Ende des 16.Jahrhunderts aus einer Kreuzung aus Rosa gallica, Rosa moschata, "Rosa canina" und Rosa damascena in Holland entstanden. Die üppig gefüllten Blüten erscheinen von weiß über rosa bis hin zu dunkelrot.Ihr Wuchs ist hoch und locker. Noch heute sind die "Bauernrosen" wegen ihres intensiven Duftes sehr beliebt.

Clusius verwendete 1601 den Begriff R. centifolia batavica - Batavia war die lateinische Bezeichnung für die Niederlande; Provence steht also nicht für die französische Region, sonden von den ehemaligen Provinzen Hollands. Clusius hat somit als Erster erkannt, dass es sich nicht um eine Form der Damaszenerrose handelte, sondern um eine neue Rose. Dies war eine Sensation! Linné hielt sie für eine Wildrosenart und gab ihr 1753 den Namen Rosa centifolia. 1768 beschrieb Miller die "Kohlrose" aufgrund der nicht eindeutigen Diagnose von Linné (Rosa centifolia) unter dem Namen Rosa provincialis, Provence-Rose, was von anderen Autoren der Zeit übernommen wurde. 1820 klärt Lindley den Irrtum von Miller auf; seit dieser Zeit heißt die Kohlrose wieder Rosa centifolia, wie schon bei Linné. Sie diente als dekoratives Motiv für alle möglichen Objekte vom Porzellan des Rokoko über Glückwunschkarten und Poesiealbumverse im Biedermeier, für Geschirr, Vasen und Stoffe.

Die Wildrose "Rosa moschata" ist wüchsig, mäßig winterhart bis -18 °C (USDA-Zone 7) und trägt kaum Stacheln. Die Blütezeit beginnt erst sehr spät - im August - und währt sehr lange, sodass die Pflanze manchmal fälschlicherweise als „öfter blühend“ bezeichnet wird. Sie ist die Wildform der "Moschus-Rose" und wurde auch für die Züchtung der "Damaszener-Rosen" ("Rosa damascena") und der "Zentifolien" ("Rosa centifolia") verwendet.

Le "Rosier cent-feuilles", "Rosa × centifolia", est un rosier hybride dont l'histoire précise ne nous est pas connue.

"Cent-feuilles" fait référence au grand nombre de pétales de la fleur. Ce rosier est aussi appelé "rose de mai", "rose chou", "rose de Hollande" (ou "Rose de Batavie") ou "rosier de Provence". Ce dernier nom vient d'une confusion introduite par le nom de "Rosa provincialis" que lui avait donné en 1768 le botaniste écossais Miller, en souvenir de "Province", terme anglais pour "Provins", qui qualifiait autrefois nombre d'hybrides de Rosa gallica1.

Historique

Connue dès l'Antiquité, cette forme a été très développée par des sélectionneurs néerlandais à partir du xviie siècle puis par des obtenteurs français à partir du xixe siècle.

Comme dans les autres groupes de roses anciennes, nombre de variétés obtenues ont disparu.

"Rosa centifolia" a produit par mutation une autre famille de roses anciennes, fameuses, les "rosiers mousseux".

Il s'agit d'un hybride complexe, issu probablement de "Rosa gallica", "Rosa moschata", "Rosa canina" et "Rosa damascena" (Huxley 1992) et peut-être de "Rosa phoenicia".

L'histoire de sa création n'est pas documentée, mais les études génétiques menées par le Dr Hurst montrent qu'il ne s'agit pas d'une espèce à part entière, mais d'hybrides d'apparition voulue et récente.

Charles de l'Écluse dit avoir observé un rosier presque blanc à plus de 120 pétales en 1591 et, dans son herbier, le botaniste anglais Gerard note la "Great Holland Rose" qu'il nomme aussi "Great Province". C'est en 1753 que Linné la nomme "Rosa × centifolia".

Entre 1580 et 1710, les rosiéristes hollandais ont créé plus de 200 variétés de "Rosa × centifolia".
