Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape

Located on land projecting into the Uruguay River west of the town of "Fray Bentos", the industrial complex was built following the development of a factory founded in 1859 to process meat produced on the vast prairies nearby. The site illustrates the whole process of meat sourcing, processing, packing and dispatching. It includes buildings and equipment of the Liebig Extract of Meat Company, which exported meat extract and corned-beef to the European market from 1865 and the Anglo Meat Packing Plant, which exported frozen meat from 1924. Through its physical location, industrial and residential buildings as well as social institutions, the site presents an illustration of the entire process of meat production on a global scale.

Geschichte

"Fray Bentos" wurde 1853 als "Villa Independencia" gegründet. Ab 1861 wurde in "Fray Bentos" nach dem Verfahren des deutschen Chemikers Justus von Liebig in großen Mengen Fleischextrakt durch die Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company hergestellt. Seit den 1930er-Jahren hat "Fray Bentos" jedoch seine Bedeutung als Zentrum der Fleischindustrie verloren. Die entstandene Industrielandschaft jedoch gehört seit 2015 zum UNESCO-Welterbe.

Historically, Fray Bentos' main industry has been meat processing. An industrial plant owned by the Societe de Fray Bentos Giebert & Cie., the Liebig Extract of Meat Company (LEMCO), was founded there in 1863. It was closed in 1979, after 117 years in operation. A local history museum opened on the site in March 2005.

The "Fray Bentos" food brand is associated with tinned processed meat products, originally corned beef and, latterly, meat pies. The brand has been sold in the United Kingdom, other European countries, and Australia. Created in the latter half of the 19th century, the name is derived from the port of "Fray Bentos" in Uruguay where the products were originally processed and packaged until the 1960s. The brand is now owned in the UK by Baxters, which manufactures the product range in Scotland. Additionally, the Campbell Soup Company manufactures and sells "Fray Bentos" branded steak and kidney pies in Australia.

Liebig: 1873–1924

In 1865, Liebig's Extract of Meat Company was founded in Britain by German chemist Justus von Liebig. The company established a factory in Uruguay to manufacture a beef extract product that would later be sold under the name "Oxo". In 1873, the factory began manufacturing tinned corned beef, which was sold in Britain under the name "Fray Bentos", the town in Uruguay where the factory was located.

"Fray Bentos" was trademarked by Liebig in 1881 for the purpose of marketing glue and "extract of meat", although, in practice, it was used principally for marketing corned beef. In fact, "Fray Bentos" became synonymous with corned beef.

"Fray Bentos" corned beef was targeted at a working-class market. The tins were also ideally suited as army rations as they weighed just one pound and were easily transportable. With the outbreak of the Boer War, the company's profits were significantly boosted from supplying corned beef to the British Army in South Africa. "Fray Bentos" corned beef was also supplied to the troops in World War I. Its popularity was such that the term "Fray Bentos" was used as slang by soldiers to mean "good". One of the early British tanks that fought at the Battle of Passchendaele was given the nickname "Fray Bentos", because the men inside felt like tinned meat.
