• Cependant, l'un des contemporains de Azara, affirme plutôt que le mot "Uruguay" est constitué de deux éléments : "uruguá" signifiant "escargot", et le "ï" signifiant "rivière", ce qui se traduirait alors par "rivière des escargots" ("río de los caracoles").
• D'après Félix de Azara (1746-1821), un ingénieur et naturaliste espagnol, ce nom désignerait un petit oiseau nommé "el urú" qui vit sur les rives du fleuve Uruguay (lequel signifie lui-même "rivière du pays de l'urú" (ou "río del país del urú").

Introduction:

"Montevideo", founded by the Spanish in 1726 as a military stronghold, soon took advantage of its natural harbor to become an important commercial center. Claimed by Argentina but annexed by Brazil in 1821, "Uruguay2 declared its independence four years later and secured its freedom in 1828 after a three-year struggle. The administrations of President Jose BATLLE in the early 20th century established widespread political, social, and economic reforms that established a statist tradition. A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement named the "Tupamaros", launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to cede control of the government to the military in 1973. By yearend, the rebels had been crushed, but the military continued to expand its hold over the government. Civilian rule was not restored until 1985. In 2004, the left-of-center Frente Amplio Coalition won national elections that effectively ended 170 years of political control previously held by the Colorado and Blanco parties. Uruguay's political and labor conditions are among the freest on the continent.

After Uruguay’s independence in 1828 without a national anthem, the poet Francisco Esteban Acuña de Figueroa offered to write one for the government, and it was accepted as a draft anthem in 1830 and officially approved by the government three years later. However, like many anthems of the era at the time, it had violent diatribes against Spain (the colonial power over Uruguay) and Portugal and Brazil (Uruguay’s neighbour who annexed the area after a revolt against Spain). The final version debuted in 1845. Acuña de Figueroa’s text had 11 verses, but today only the first verse and the chorus is sung.

The music, typical for a Latin American epic anthem is operatic in nature, reminiscent of works by Italian composers Donizetti, Verdi, Bellini or Rossini, but the music was composed by Francisco José Debali, a Hungarian who had moved to Uruguay in 1838 after having served as a military band master in the Piedmont area of Italy. Acuña de Figueroa’s words were first set to a piece of music by a composer named de Barros, but in 1848 it was set to Debali’s work. The extended grandeur of the music makes it run very long, even though only one verse is performed today; at 105 bars and almost five minutes in length (if the musical introduction is included), Uruguay’s anthem is the longest in the world.

Endlich Frieden am Rio de la Plata

Colonia del Sacramento, einst von Portugiesen gegründet, ist die älteste europäische Siedlung auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Uruguay. Ihre strategisch günstige Lage in der Bucht des Rio de la Plata führte zu ständigen Territorialstreitigkeiten zwischen Spanien und Portugal, zu Belagerungen und Zerstörungen der Stadt.

Colonia del Sacramento ist die älteste europäische Siedlung auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Uruguay. Die Stadt wurde im Januar 1680 durch Don Manuel Lobo, Gouverneur von Rio de Janeiro, im Auftrag des Prinzregenten Pedro II. von Portugal, gegründet. Er wollte an der Küste des Rio de la Plata einen Brückenkopf zur Verteidigung seines Reichs anlegen. Die strategisch günstige Lage der Stadt in der Bucht des Rio de la Plata führte zu Territorialstreitigkeiten zwischen Spanien und Portugal. Erst 1828, mit der Gründung der unabhängigen Republik Uruguay, endete der Streit der Kolonialmächte. Die Altstadt, die 1995 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde, sowie die Bastionen San Miguel, San Pedro und Santa Rita sind ebenso Zeugnisse der Vergangenheit, wie die Reste der Stadtmauer.

Wie anders könnte dieser Fluss heißen als Rio de la Plata. Streng genommen ist das gar kein Fluss, sondern das Mündungsdelta des Paraná und des Uruguay. Der Paraná entspringt in Brasilien und ist fast 4000 Kilometer lang. Auf seinem Weg bildet er die Grenze von Paraguay und Argentinien. Der andere Fluss, der Uruguay, hat unserem Land den Namen gegeben.

"Fluss der bunten Vögel" heißt er in der Sprache der Guarani. "Rio de la Plata" - des Silbers aus Bolivien wegen, das über den Atlantik nach Europa verschifft wurde.

Der Urlaub in Kürze:

Mit der Buquebus-Expressfähre starteten wir in Buenos Aires und erreichten Colonia del Sacramento nach gut einer Stunde. Dort besichtigten wir für gut drei Stunden die historische Altstadt, bevor wir uns am Nachmittag zum Badestrand „Playa del Real de San Carlos” begaben. Am nächsten Morgen reisten wir mit dem Bus weiter Richtung Punta del Este, einem der bekanntesten Badeorte in Südamerika, wo wir die nächsten beiden Tage verbrachten. Von dort ging es per Limousine weiter, eigentlich hatten wir ein Busticket, aber unser Reisebüro musste ein Auto zurück nach Montevideo überführen und bot uns kurzerhand die Mitfahrt an, nach Montevideo. Zwei Tage Zeit nahmen wir uns zur Besichtigung der Hauptstadt Uruguays, bevor wir dann wieder mit der Fähre zurück nach Buenos Aires kreuzten.

Le nom du pays, "Uruguay" (prononcé en français [u-ru-gwé]), proviendrait de la langue charrua parlée par les Charrúas. D'après Félix de Azara (1746-1821), un ingénieur et naturaliste espagnol, ce nom désignerait un petit oiseau nommé "el urú" qui vit sur les rives du fleuve Uruguay (lequel signifie lui-même "rivière du pays de l'urú" (ou "río del país del urú"). Cependant, l'un des contemporains de Azara, affirme plutôt que le mot "Uruguay" est constitué de deux éléments : "uruguá" signifiant "escargot", et le "ï" signifiant "rivière", ce qui se traduirait alors par "rivière des escargots" ("río de los caracoles").
