Roses that are Classified as Polyanthas

Graham Thomas doesn't like them. Nor, I guess, does David Austin, much. The nature of the polyantha rose is to grow vigorously, densely, and without any serious disease problems, and to produce masses of color. Many succeed in completely obscuring the underlying structure at the peak of bloom. Thus it is that their individual flowers are not so important as the sheer quantity of them.

Those to whom a rose must be a distinctive blossom will find polyanthas defy their idea of what a rose is or what it ought to be. Those who would employ the rose to add color and spirit to an otherwise dull garden will be hard pressed to find a class of rose better suited to the task.

Polyantha Roses

(E?)(L?) http://www.roseinfo.com/rose_guide.html

The Polyantha class was the result of crossing china roses with the rambling Japanese Multiflora rose. The everblooming characteristic and compact shape are two traits seen in this class. Polyanathas are hardy, disease resistant and floriferous. Their dwarf and compact nature lends themselves well when used as low borders, mass plantings or in containers.
