About Lapham's Quarterly

"Not to know what happened before
one was born is always to be a child."—Cicero

Lapham's Quarterly embodies the belief that history is the root of all education, scientific and literary as well as political and economic. Each issue addresses a topic of current interest and concern — War, Religion, Money, Medicine, Nature, Crime — by bringing up to the microphone of the present the advice and counsel of the past. Valuable observations of the human character and predicament don't become obsolete.

The texts are drawn from authors on the order of Shakespeare, Aristotle, Tolstoy, Twain, Thucydides, Woolf, Dickens, Wharton, Gibbon, Keynes, Gandhi, Balzac, Austen, Thoreau, Didion, and De Gaulle. Abridged rather than paraphrased, none of the texts in the Quarterly runs to a length longer than seven pages, others no more that seven paragraphs. Together with the writing of the world's great thinkers, each issue offers full-color reproductions of paintings by the world's great painters. The connecting of the then with the now is augmented with the further evidence found in letters, speeches, diaries and photographs, in confessions voluntary and coerced, in five-act plays and three-part songs.

Maßgeblich beteiligt an der Unabhängigkeit der USA war ein Deutscher! Die Amerikaner haben das nicht vergessen und feiern ihren General deshalb jedes Jahr mit der "Steubenparade" auf der New Yorker 5th Avenue.

Zum diesjährigen Independence Day hat das Ancestry.de-Team die Historie des Unabhängigkeitskriegs der USA unter die Lupe genommen und erinnert an einen Mann der in Deutschland heute kaum mehr bekannt ist: Der im September 1730 in Thüringen geborene Sohn eines Hauptmanns, "Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben", hat tatkräftig an der Unabhängigkeit der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika mitgetan. Die von Steuben waren eine traditionsbewusste Soldatenfamilie. Und auch der prominente Patenonkel passt ins martialische Bild der handfesten Sippe: Soldatenkönig Friedrich Wilhelm I. von Preußen.
