About

Codex 99 is either an occasionally updated weblog or incrementally expanded website about the history of the visual arts and graphic design.

Exactly what the “visual arts” are is a good question and mostly follows the Stewartian argument of “I’ll know it when I see it.” So far this has meant old photos, National Geographic, color theory, long-dead stage actresses, things Victorians liked, Swiss cartographic relief, the history of the Greek and Latin alphabets, physicians in Nazi Germany, the Bible or parts thereof, French book illustration, art nouveau, mid-century pin-ups, board and card games, Charley Harper, Bradford Washburn, and Ernest Hemingway. In other words - typical design blog stuff.

Individual posts are embellished with diagrams, drawings, illustrations, maps, and photographs. Wherever possible, these images are linked to much larger versions.

about hive

From humble beginnings fueled primarily on inspiration, hive has grown to inhabit its own free-standing building in the Pearl District, Portland's most upscale urban neighborhood. We are proud to be an authorized retailer for Alessi, Artemide, Artifort, Carl Hansen, Cassina, Flos, Kartell, Knoll & Vitra to name just a few. hive has been noted in national magazines such as Dwell, Index, In Style, Lucky and Western Interiors magazines.

We like to think of hivemodern.com, as the web-stop for the savvy design enthusiast.... bringing the rare and unusual plus time-tested icons of design directly to your front door. Our manifesto is really quite simple: to share the joys of Good Design while providing value and excellence in service to our patrons. Less is more
Weniger ist mehr
Less is a bore
fat-free design (W3)

Die Redewendung engl. "less is more" = dt. "weniger ist mehr" soll auf den Architekten und Designer Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe (1929) zurück gehen. Er war der letzte Leiter des "Bauhaus" und einer der Begründer der modernen Architektur. Er favorisierte einen minimalistischen Stil. Gedruckt findet man "less is more" zum ersten Mal in einem Gedicht über den Maler Andrea del Sarto aus dem Jahr 1855.

Im Jahr 1986 stellte der Architekt Robert Venturi die These "Less is a bore." dagegen.

Und schließlich schuf Ross Lovegrove die Synthese mit der Bezeichnung "fat-free design".

The Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention

Charles Eames (1907-78) and Ray Eames (1912-88) gave shape to America's twentieth century. Their lives and work represented the nation's defining social movements: the West Coast's coming-of-age, the economy's shift from making goods to producing information, and the global expansion of American culture. The Eameses embraced the era's visionary concept of modern design as an agent of social change, elevating it to a national agenda. Their evolution from furniture designers to cultural ambassadors demonstrated their boundless talents and the overlap of their interests with those of their country. In a rare era of shared objectives, the Eameses partnered with the federal government and the country's top businesses to lead the charge to modernize postwar America.
