DDC
Dewey Decimal Classification (W3)

"Dewey Decimal Classification", also called "Dewey Decimal System", system for organizing the contents of a library based on the division of all knowledge into 10 groups, with each group assigned 100 numbers. Dewey-Dezimalklassifikation und Register - DDC 22

Begr. v. Dewey, Melvil

Hrsg. v. Mitchell, Joan S. / Die Deutsche Bibliothek

Unter Mitw. v. Beall, Julianne / Martin, Giles / Matthews Jr., Winton E. / New, Gregory R.

KK: Index, Keywords, Philosophy, Games

As we're confronted with an ever-vaster quantity of unsorted online information, one of the greatest challenges of coming decades may be determining ways to find a given needle of information in the haystack of the Web.
...
However: if an indexing system is haphazard or arbitrary, oddities result. Imagine how difficult it would be to use taxonomies like the "Dewey Decimal System" (or the Library of Congress numbering system) if one top-level category ("100," say) meant "purple things that are bigger than a breadbasket" while another top-level category ("200," for instance) indicated "natural science". Plenty of such semi-arbitrary indexing systems have accreted on the Net. For instance, the "Internet Movie Database", or "IMDb" (now owned by Amazon), associates keywords with each movie, but the set of keywords has grown organically over time, with new keywords added (I believe) by users of the system. Thus, the keywords are not all at the same level of abstraction. The result is an entertaining hodgepodge of keywords for many films, and the basis for the game of Keywords. In this game, one player presents a list of keywords that could be used in a movie database to describe a film (or novel or other item), and other players try to guess what the described item is. For instance, a couple of real keyword lists from the IMDb:

About

The DPLA is leading the first concrete steps toward the realization of a large-scale digital public library that will make the cultural and scientific record available to all.

The DPLA planning initiative grew out of an October 2010 meeting at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, which brought together over 40 representatives from foundations, research institutions, cultural organizations, government, and libraries to discuss best approaches to building a national digital library. In December 2010, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, generously supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, convened leading experts in libraries, technology, law, and education to begin work on this problem; a two-year process of intense grassroots community organization, beginning in October 2011 and hosted at the Berkman Center, will result in a realistic and detailed workplan for launching the DPLA, as well as unveiling of a prototype of the system with specially digitized materials.

Huntington was also a man of vision - with a special interest in books, art, and gardens. During his lifetime, he amassed the core of one of the finest research libraries in the world, established a splendid art collection, and created an array of botanical gardens with plants from a geographic range spanning the globe. Library Way (W3)

(E?)(L?) http://www.grandcentralpartnership.nyc/our-neighborhood/library-way

In the late ’90s, the Grand Central Partnership transformed East 41st Street between Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue into a dramatic promenade to the "New York Public Library"’s majestic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the length of which is regularly studded with bronze sidewalk plaques featuring quotes from literature and poetry and the whole of which is now known as "Library Way". The Library Way project was completed by GCP with the assistance of the "New York Public Library", the property owners and commercial tenants along 41st Street, library organizations, and the New York City Department of Transportation.

When the Library Way project was first initiated by GCP, 41st Street from Fifth Avenue to the Park Avenue/Pershing Square Viaduct was a shadowy street that served as a delivery-entrance “backstage” to nearby 42nd Street. But new development along this thoroughfare, including some of the city’s hottest hotels and coolest restaurants, has made 41st Street one of the Grand Central neighborhood’s more exciting and active streets.

Library Way - East 41st Street

Ask NYPL gets a lot of questions about the sidewalk on Library Way. If you haven't seen it before, on your next trip to the main building on Fifth Avenue, be sure to approach from the east and walk along 41st Street. You'll have a perfect view of the building gleaming in the morning sun, and you can stop to read some inspirational quotes about reading, writing, and literature along the way.

Below are the quotes along with where to find them in the library catalog, poets.org or Project Gutenberg.

You can also read more about the plaques themselves in the Washington Post, Huffington Post, and the New York Times.

There are actually 98 plaques, according to library spokeswoman Amy Geduldig — an equal number on both sides of 41st Street that are identical to each other. I have to take her word for it, because when we strolled the street Monday afternoon with library officials Ann Thornton and Christopher Platt, we stuck to the north side.

The quotes were selected during the 1990s by a panel that included representatives from the library; the Grand Central Partnership, which manages the Grand Central Business Improvement District; and the New Yorker magazine. And the plaques, which are graphically intriguing in their own right, were designed by Gregg LeFevre.

LOC
Library of Congress (W3)

Die Library of Congress bietet umfassende Online-Dokumente zu Geschichte, Politik und Kultur der USA.

The Library of Congress was established on April, 24 in the year 1800. The original legislation authorized $5,000 for the creation of what was described as a reference library for Congress. Nearly a century later (after two separate fires required rebuilding the collection twice), an impressive new Library of Congress building opened its doors. By the end of the 20th century, the 28 million holdings of the Library of Congress filled three buildings, and thousands more works were crossing the threshold daily for cataloging.

The classification used within the Library of Congress is known as (no surprise here) "Library of Congress classification". That system uses the letters of the alphabet plus numbers for its notation.

The Library of Congress classification contrasts with expansive or "Cutter classification" (which uses both numbers and letters in its notation and which has seven complete schedules, each one after the first being more minutely subdivided than the previous one).

Then there's the familiar "Dewey Decimal classification", where main classes are designated by a three-digit number, and subdivisions are shown by numbers after a decimal point.

(E?)(L?) http://www.britannica.com/topic/Library-of-Congress

"Library of Congress", the de facto national library of the United States and the largest library in the world. Its collection was growing at a rate of about two million items per year; it reached more than 155 million items in 2012. The Library of Congress serves members, committees, and staff of the U.S. Congress, other government agencies, libraries throughout the country and the world, and the scholars, researchers, artists, and scientists who use its resources. It is the national centre for library service to the blind and physically handicapped, and it offers many concerts, lectures, and exhibitions for the general public.

Melvil Dewey (W3)

Nach "Melvil Dewey" ("Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey") wurde das "Dewey Decimal System" benannt, ein Ordnungssystem für Bibliotheken.

Melvil Dewey, a librarian who helped found the American Library Association, was born on this date in 1851.

Dewey devised the "Dewey Decimal System", the cataloguing and classifying method of organizing books on library shelves that preceded (and inspired) the other major system of organization, the Library of Congress classification.

In retrospect, Dewey's system seems obvious: knowledge is organized into ten main classes, and each of those classes is divided into 10 divisions; those 100 divisions each contain 10 sections. But remember that, until Dewey, books in a library were not organized; at best, their location on a shelf was recorded in a librarian's catalog.

In Dewey's system, each book is first categorized by class or category. For example, the category Technology is notated as a 600; the subcategory Agriculture and Related Technologies narrows the broad 600 into the 630s; and specifying Animal Husbandry further refines the classification to 636. That three digit number is followed by a decimal point, and then still-finer nuances of specification come into play. Still with us? 636.089 is translated by Dewey into All Creatures Great and Small, the memoir of Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot.

Power Down Scenario (W3)

(E?)(L1) http://www.lii.org/

Message to our Readers, July 3, 2003

Dear "New This Week" readers

We are not publishing this week; it's our annual Fourth of July break. Happy holidays to all of you!

When we resume publishing next week, the list of new sites will be noticeably shorter. We want to explain why this is, and reassure you that this is a temporary situation.

Our primary funding agency, the California State Library, is fully supportive of lii.org's performance and has committed to providing funding at a level that will allow lii.org to continue its popular services.

Unfortunately, due to California state law, our funding cannot be released until the State budget is passed. We at lii.org must stretch our resources for the time being until the new funds are available.

We call this our "Power Down Scenario", and you can read more about it at http://lii.org/search/file/funding.

We greatly look forward to powering UP again, and we appreciate your continued support.

Remember--power down is not power out!

Karen G. Schneider, kgs@lii.org
lii.org Week Listowner and Director,
Librarians' Index to the Internet
Information You Can Trust!

tufts - Perseus Digital Library

(E6)(L1) http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/

About Perseus
Perseus is an evolving digital library, engineering interactions through time, space, and language. Our primary goal is to bring a wide range of source materials to as large an audience as possible. We anticipate that greater accessibility to the sources for the study of the humanities will strengthen the quality of questions, lead to new avenues of research, and connect more people through the connection of ideas.

(E6)(L1) http://nils.lib.tufts.edu/4000.01/
The digital archive combines texts, maps, and images into a flexible resource that complements the discovery process. Users can take advantage of the non-linear nature of both research and the Internet, and access the resources in the Bolles collection from a variety of entry points, moving from text, to image, to map and back again to make intellectual connections among the resources.
