hippy (W3)
Eine der Theorien führt die Bezeichnung "hippy" (auch "hippie") (1953) über "hipster" = "to be cool", auf engl. "hip" = dt. "Hüfte" zurück. Dabei ist das "auf der Hüfte liegen" auf Dauer - auch beim kiffen - gar nicht so bequem.
"Hippy" ist auch die Abkürzung für "Home Instruction Program for Pre-school Youngsters".

I was reading a book a couple of months ago by a guy called Sheldon Kopp, who's apparently a famous psychotherapist. He was saying that in the forties "hipster" was the word for "being cool". And he was saying that that originated from the term "on the hip", which was a term to describe people who were using opium. And they would be on the opium and they would be lying down, "on the hip", and their view of the world would be a little bit less egotistical. Less from a personal standpoint and more of an open-minded thing. And I found it very interesting, the fact that now people could say, "Oh, bloody hippy", and it would be looked upon as a negative thing as opposed to being on the button—on the ball.

Carnal Knowledge
A Navel Gazer's Dictionary of Anatomy, Etymology, and Trivia
Taschenbuch: 272 Seiten
Verlag: Griffin; Auflage: 1 Reprint (7. August 2007)
Sprache: Englisch
Kurzbeschreibung
From head to toe to breast to behind, Carnal Knowledge is a delightfully intoxicating tour of the words we use to describe our bodies. Did you know:
- -eye is one of the oldest written words in the English language?
- -callipygian means “having beautiful buttocks”?
- -gam, a slang word for “leg,” comes from the French word jambe?
A treat for anyone who gets a kick out of words, Carnal Knowledge is also the perfect gift for anyone interested in the human body and the many (many, many) ways it’s been described.
