First settled in 1847 by John Diamond and Jacob Spores, the small community gained fame for a beautiful stallion imported from "Coburg" Germany by a local blacksmith. The horse had such a reputation that the blossoming town was soon known simply as "Coburg". A fascinating heritage has awarded the City of Coburg recognition as a National Historic District, encompassing over 187 sites and structures.

History
The city was originally named "Diamond" after "John Diamond", an early pioneer in the area, on whose land claim the city was located. The city's current name comes from a stallion that was named after the "Coburg" district of Bavaria, Germany, from whence the horse had been imported. The Coburg Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The period of significance of the buildings in the district dates back to 1875.

What Ever Happened to Half.com, Oregon?
...

The Rose Garden Store, 850 SW Rose Garden Way, Portland, OR 97205
Founded in 1917, Portland's International Rose Test Garden is the oldest official, continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. In the beginning, even though World War I was raging in Europe, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland's garden for testing and to keep the new hybrids safe from being destroyed by the bombing in Europe.
The primary purpose of the garden is to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties. The City of Portland Gold Medal Awards are issued annually to the best introductions. The first "Gold Medal" rose award was given in 1919, making it the oldest rose testing program of its kind in the United States. Portland is the only North American City to issue such awards. These award winning varieties are planted in the Gold Medal Garden.

Older, but not as well known, the Peninsula Park Rose Garden is located in north Portland. As you step into the sunken rose garden, you walk through lush paths, sweeping archways and over two acres packed with 10,000 traditional rose plantings. The octagonal bandstand was constructed in 1913. It was used for World War I patriotic demonstrations and is now the site for many weddings and concerts.
Ladd's Addition is Portland's oldest planned community. It was plotted in 1891 and included four diamond shaped parks located on the points of a compass. Today, a team of citizen volunteers assist Portland Parks and Recreation in caring for the 3,000 plants.
