Anthora (W3)
"antorcha" = dt. "Fackel", span. "antorcha olímpica" = dt. "olympische Fackel", "olympische Flamme" an.

The "Anthora" is a paper coffee cup design that has become iconic of New York City daily life — its name is a play on the word amphora.
The cup was originally designed by Leslie Buck of the Sherri Cup Co. in 1963, to appeal to Greek-owned coffee shops in New York City — and was later copied heavily by other companies. The genuine Anthora depicts an image of an Ancient Greek amphora, a meander design on the top and bottom rim, and the words "WE ARE HAPPY TO SERVE YOU" in a font that resembles ancient Greek writing. The blue and white colors were inspired by the flag of Greece. The cup subsequently became the metropolitan area's definitive coffee-to-go cup;

New York City nickname
New York City words
Why is NYC called "The Big Apple"?

Apparently by about 1910 jazz musicians in New Orleans were using the expression the "Big Apple" as a loose translation of a common Spanish expression "manzana principal", meaning (literally) the main "apple orchard".
They used the "Big Apple" to mean the main city block downtown, the place where the action is.

Why is New York City known as “the Big Apple” and “Gotham?”

New York City goes by many names, such as the “City that Never Sleeps” and the less humble “Center of the Universe.” But the Big Apple is the most kenspeckled.
There are many rumors about the history of the nickname. Did the city used to be filled with apple orchards? Does the name originate with a brothel madam named Eve?
Actually, the widespread use of the nickname began in the 1970s as

According Gerald Leonard Cohen's Origin of New York City's Nickname "The Big Apple" (New York: Peter Lang, 1991), while "apple" in American slang means "fellow" and "big apple" means "big shot", the first consistent use of the term to apply to New York City came in the 1920s. John J. Fitz Gerald, a horseracing reporter for the Morning Telegraph, used the term (in columns from 1921-1927) for "New York City racetracks", and that sense of it "the metropolitan thoroughbred racing circuit" entered general usage after 1928. Walter Winchell used it in a 1927 column to refer to Broadway ("Broadway is the Big Apple, the Main Stem, the goal of all ambition, the pot of gold at the end of a drab and somewhat colorless rainbow."). In the 1930s black jazz musicians applied the terms "the apple" or, less often, "the big apple" to Harlem or to the entire city, with overtones, again, of the "big time". In 1937 a dance called "the big apple" was launched in an African-American nightclub called "Fat Sam's Big Apple", in Columbia, South Carolina, and became a short lived national craze. In 1971, Charles Gillett, then president of the New York Convention & Visitors Bureau, used the term as a name for New York City, in a marketing campaign, after which it won wide acceptance as a synonym for Gotham.

The most recent research traces the phrase back to a book published in 1909. In a New York Times article of February 1, 1989, David Shulman refers to The Wayfarer in New York, a collection of essays edited by Edward S. Martin. On page xiv of that book, Mr. Martin wrote that the rest of the country "inclines to think the big apple gets a disproportionate share of the national sap." This is the earliest use of the term yet brought to our attention.

Contents: Nature of the problem - A look at the proposed origins - Apples as something special - Big Apple first as «NYC racetracks» - Tracing the development of the Big Apple dance - Contribution of the black jazz musicians - Once again: credit to Charles Gillett for popularizing The Big Apple, 1971(with background information on Mr. Gillett) - Appendix (includes: Fun City «NYC» - courtesy of Mayor John Lindsay and journalist Dick Schaap) - Bibliography - Index.
Umschlagtext
The present monograph aims for a comprehensive look at the history of The Big Apple, parts of which are already known. What has been overlooked is the important role of turf-writer John J. Fitz Gerald, who first used The Big Apple «NYC racetracks» in print and then slowly popularized this usage, 1921ff. In the 1930s The Big Apple was picked up by black jazz musicians to designate NYC in general (and Harlem in particular) as the place where the greatest jazz in the world was being played. And in 1971 Charles Gillett revived The Big Apple as part of a public-relations campaign on behalf of NYC.
Why were the NYC tracks likened to an apple? Because the big Red Delicious apples - developed in Iowa (1870s) - were regarded as something extra special. And for the jockeys active in the «bushes» (Idaho, South Dakota, etc.) the NYC tracks represented the big time, the big treat, i.e. «the big apple».

A walking tour company in New York City (since 1991) is called the "Big Onion". They have a new guide book out.
They explain that immigrants to New York had tears, and for them it was like seeing the many layers of a big onion. Their web site states: "Long before it was dubbed the "Big Apple", those who knew New York City called it the "Big Onion".
The web site of the New York Public Library (NYPL), where you'll learn that the "Big Apple" comes from 'whores'. The NYPL states that New York City was the "Big Onion" about a hundred years before the "Big Apple". The scholar cited is Robert Hendrickson.
I just checked on NEW YORK TIMES full text. I limited my search to before 1920 to avoid the hundreds of hits. I got hits - TWO HITS. One was a receipt list, and the other wasn't appropriate, either.
So I checked again, adding twenty more years to the search.
Again, no one called New York City "the Big Onion."
It's a free country, I suppose, and you can say anything you want. But this "Big Onion" thing isn't true!

Brooklynese in New Orleans
(E?)(L?) http://www.americandaily.com/article/9095
...
Every thing is different in New Orleans. This is the City of Lagniappe (something extra), romantic paddle boats, the French Quarter, muffelattas and Mardi Gras. Even the street names speak of New Orleans unusual character. Names like Tchoupitoulas, Melpomene, Chef Menteur, and Terpsichore. The dialects and colloquialisms spring from Creole, French, African, Irish and many other tongues too numerous to mention. Perhaps most noticeable of all is the common "Brooklynese" spoken by most New Orleanians as a result of Brooklyn middle school teachers being imported to New Orleans over a hundred years ago to help educate New Orleans children.

Castle Clinton (W3)
Benannt wurde die Festung "Castle Clinton" nach dem ehemaligen Gouverneur "DeWitt Clinton".
(E?)(L?) http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/national-monuments-castle-clinton-national-monument.htm
Castle Clinton National Monument, at the tip of Manhattan, has had a long and varied existence. The circular fortress was built between 1808 and 1811 as one of a series of forts to protect New York City from potential British aggression.
Originally known as the "Southwest Battery", its name was changed after the War of 1812 to Castle Clinton in honor of DeWitt Clinton, a former mayor of the city and later governor of New York State. No longer needed to defend New York, Castle Clinton was turned into a civic garden in 1824, is now Castle Clinton National Monument.

Gotham (W2)
"Schildbürger" ist "Wise man of Gotham".

"Beef on Weck"
Buffalo, New York
Salty, seed-studded "kummelweck" rolls are a German vehicle for sliced beef.
German immigrants get credit for bringing the "kummelweck" to Buffalo (in German, "kummel" means "caraway seed" and "weck" means "roll"). It's the crunchy top of the weck that makes this sandwich of thinly sliced roast beef special. At Schwabl’s, where beef on weck has been on the menu since the restaurant opened in 1837, the sandwich is served with pan juices from the roast for dipping the roll's top half. Pumpernick ‘n Pastry, a local bakery that sells about 15 dozen rolls a day to Schwabl's, has a quick solution for out-of-towners who crave a "kummelweck":

Brooklynisms
(E?)(L?) http://www.lampos.com/brooklyn.htm
Collected by Jim Lampos and Michaelle Pearson
Collecting Brooklynisms is an ongoing project for Michaelle and me. These are slang words or expressions that have originated in, or are associated with the great and colorful borough of Brooklyn, NY. For no particular reason, the list is in completely random order, so keep scrolling down to find your favorites. We originally tried to avoid terms that are strictly ethnic, such as Sicilianisms or Yiddishisms, unless they are generally used among different groups within Brooklyn...but lately we tossed that rule out the window too. For all you Sopranos fans, we've thrown in a few Paulie Walnuts favorites just for you. We invite all Brooklyn natives and scholars to contribute words, phrases, and corrections.
(Latest update: 2/11/05. Thanks for all the great contributions. Please keep 'em comin!)

Manhattanization (W3)
1626
Peter Minuit became director-general of the company. He purchased "Manhattan Island" from the Indians for $24 and founded the settlement of "New Amsterdam". Meanwhile the attention of Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was called to the Delaware country. In 1637, the New Sweden Company was organized, chiefly as a result of the encouragement of two Dutchmen, Samuel Blommaert and Minuit.

An English Colony
The English, claiming the whole region on the basis of the explorations of John Cabot, made good their claim in the Second Dutch War (1664-67). In 1664 an English fleet sailed into the harbor of "New Amsterdam", and Stuyvesant surrendered without a struggle. "New Netherland" then became the colonies of "New York" and "New Jersey", granted by King Charles II to his brother, the "duke of York" (later James II). Except for brief recapture (1673-74) by the Dutch, "New York" remained English until the American Revolution.

Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian-born navigator sailing for France, discovered New York Bay in 1524. Henry Hudson, an Englishman employed by the Dutch, reached the bay and sailed up the river now bearing his name in 1609, the same year that northern New York was explored and claimed for France by Samuel de Champlain.
In 1624 the first permanent Dutch settlement was established at Fort Orange (now Albany). One year later Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from the Indians for trinkets worth about 60 Dutch guilders and founded the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (now New York City), which was surrendered to the English in 1664.

Libraries are the memory of humankind, irreplaceable repositories of documents of human thought and action. The New York Public Library is such a memory bank par excellence, one of the great knowledge institutions of the world, its myriad collections ranking with those of the "British Library", the "Library of Congress", and the "Bibliothèque nationale de France". Virtually all of the Library's many collections and services are freely available to all comers. In fact, the Library has but one criterion for admission: curiosity.
The "New York Public Library" comprises simultaneously a set of scholarly research collections and a network of community libraries, and its intellectual and cultural range is both global and local, while singularly attuned to New York City. That combination lends to the Library an extraordinary richness. It is special also in being historically a privately managed, nonprofit corporation with a public mission, operating with both private and public financing in a century-old, still evolving private-public partnership. The research collections (for reference only, and organized as The Research Libraries, with four major centers) resemble the holdings of the great national and university libraries, and the community circulating libraries (organized as The Branch Libraries) resemble classic American municipal libraries.
All these features, taken together, make The New York Public Library a unique and complex institution, wonderful to use but not always easy to grasp. A useful way to understand the Library is to consider its beginnings and subsequent evolution. It has been very much a creature of time and place, bearing the imprint of its origins but always, like any living organism, coping with struggles and problems while adapting to an ever changing environment.

The streets of New York are full of characters who don't mince words - or care who hears them. This collection presents some of the most outlandish real life conversations overheard on the sidewalk, in the subway, and at the next table. It's the Big Apple peeled, a hysterically unvarnished portrait of the city that never sleeps - and often neglects to think before it speaks in public.

History of Philipstown
A Brief History of Philipstown by Don McDonald, Town Historian
The Town of "Philipstown" came into being resulting from what might seem to be considered the first ever real estate deal in what was then the southwestern corner of Dutchess County. Two obscure gentlemen, originally from Holland, and later taking up residency in New Admsterdam, (today’s Manhattan) obtained a license from New York State in October 1687 permitting their purchase of a deed from the Native Americans then living in what is now "Philipstown". Lambert Dorlandt and Jan Sybrant, 4 years later, purchased said deed in July 1691 from the Indian residency, through the sanction of New York State. For whatever reasons, Lambert and Jan, in July 1697, (6 years following purchase from the Indians) sold their property to abundantly rich and politically minded merchant, "Adolph Philipse", from New York. (New Amsterdam was renamed New York in 1664.) This pivotal transaction would, down a long road, culminate in "Philipstown" originating into one of the first townships in the "Philipse Patent", which was then still a part of Dutchess County. "Adolph Philipse" could well be considered the first citizen of "Philipstown", but most certainly a distinguished member of the family clan from whom our township takes its name.
"Philipstown", officially on March 7, 1788, became a township; 91 years following Adolph’s purchase from Dorlandt and Sybrant. It would be another 24 years before what is now "Putnam County" would break away from Dutchess County, becoming it’s own entity. Incorporated in the new county was the old township, which continues to this day more vibrant than ever, having matured in character and substance through the wisdom of age.

Street fairs have came under criticism in the summer of 2005. A New York Post writer editorialized that the street fairs are all the same and that many should be eliminated. The debate was continued online on the Gotham Gazette. It’s long been known that the same vendors go to many of the street fairs, selling the same socks, sausages, and sunglasses.

Taxi (the word "taxicab" and the "yellow" color)
It has been said that Harry N. Allen coined the word "taxicab" in the fall of 1907, and that he also introduced the color "yellow" to his vehicles. I think that’s wrong on both counts.
Paris and then London both had "taxicabs" before they were introduced to New York in October 1907. The word "taxi" is short for "taximeter".
Harry Allen’s cabs were red. The W. C. P. Taxicab Company introduced the "yellow cab" in New York in the spring of 1909.
In some countries, taxicabs are commonly yellow. This practice apparently began in New York City, where taxi owner "Harry N. Allen" painted his taxis yellow after learning that yellow is the color most easily seen at a distance. See List of taxi cab colours.
He was the man who started the taxicab industry in New York City. He coined the name "taxicab" and copyrighted it.
Tenderloin, lonja, lonza (W3)

The Bronx (W3)
(E?)(L?) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ccho/Cards/history/newyork1.htm
Evidently, Jonas Bronck was Danish by ancestry. However, this seems to be less important than one might think. The Dutch of New Netherlands and New Amsterdam were quite receptive to just about anybody settling in their midst. Dutch was not the only language in New Amesterdam. English was widely used before Dutch surrendered their hegemony over the Hudson Valley and New Jersey.
Frisians in Early New York:
Tens of thousands of motorists enter Manhattan daily over the Third Avenue Bridge or leave it over the Wills Avenue Bridge. Very few of them are aware of the fact that they are crossing the site of the first European settlement north of the Harlem River. It is also the site of Jonas Bronck's farm, which he named Emmaus, after the village where, according to the Bible, the risen Christ first appeared to His disciples. The farm-house, east of the Third Avenue Bridge at the foot of Lincoln Avenue, bore the Bronck family motto, "Yield not to evil."
Jonas Bronck was a remarkable man. The son of a Danish Lutheran pastor, he was born in Copenhagen but spent most of his youth in the Faroe Islands, to which his father had been transferred. Later Jonas became influential in shipping circles in Holland, and was able to acquire ownership of a shipping vessel.

Tuxedo - Rose
Jh.

Tuxedo, US, NY (W2)
Jh.
"place of the bear" und "clear flowing water"
"fell down in surrender" (?)).
[Joseph T. Shipley, "The Origins of English Words," 1984]

The plural may be spelled "tuxedos" or "tuxedoes"; no one seems to care. Moreover, it may be clipped down to simply "tux" in informal or colloquial speech. The plural of the clipping is "tuxes". Again, in highly informal English, someone "wearing a tuxedo" may be said "to be tuxedoed".

"Caftans" and "tallitot" — Who wore what at the Clinton/Mezvinsky wedding & what it means
The nuptials of Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky focus attention on the surprising history of some great words and attire: fuchsia, tuxedo, yarmulke, and more.
The groom, who is Jewish, wore a tallit and a yarmulke. A tallit is a shawl-like garment usually made from wool or silk. It has fringes, called zizith, at the four corners. It is worn during religious services or special occasions.
...
Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey designed the groom’s tuxedo. "Tuxedo" got its name from the country club in "Tuxedo Park, N.Y." where the suit was first worn in the late nineteenth century.

Typhoid Mary (W3)

The PC
Personal Computing Comes of Age
On August 12, 1981, at a press conference at the "Waldorf Astoria" ballroom in New York City, Phillip “Don” Estridge announced the IBM Personal Computer (IBM 5150) with a price tag of $1,565. Two decades earlier, an IBM computer often cost as much as nine million dollars and required an air-conditioned quarter-acre of space with a staff of 60. The new IBM PC was not only faster, it put a computer within every household’s reach. The IBM PC helped revolutionize the way the world does business. One year later, it earned Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” award.

"Waldorf-Astoria" 1899
