Hollywood (township) Carver County (W3)

"Ilex aquifolium").

Located on the western edge of Gustavus Adolphus College, the Linnaeus Arboretum provides the College and community with a living sanctuary of plants and animals for education, recreation, reflection and stewardship.

The Arboretum features acres of pairies, woodlands and ponds for exploration and study; miles of trails for running, walking, biking or skiing; and beautiful gardens and open space for events and gatherings.

Named for 18th century Swedish botanist "Carl Linnaeus", the arboretum was established in 1973 on what had previously been agricultural land, and designed to represent Minnesota's three major ecosystems: northern conferious forest, tallgrass prairie and deciduous woodland.

Mall of America (W3)

Engl. "mall" geht zurück auf engl. "mallet" = dt. "Holzhammer", "Poloschläger", "Krocketschläger" und weiter auf lat. "malleus", gen. lat. "mallei" = dt. "Hammer" (lat. "pellere malleo" = engl. "to strike with a mallet or bat").

Mall of America

In his final term as Governor of Minnesota, Rudy Perpich set out to extend the economic fortunes of the state by bringing the world to Minnesota. The "Mall of America" was one of several means to that end and followed on other projects that he led: the establishment of the World Trade Center in St. Paul, a state visit by Russian Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, and the selection of the Twin Cities as the Super Bowl venue in 1992. The "Mall of America" was opened in 1992 on land formerly occupied by the Metropolitan Sports Arena and Met Stadium, the original home of the Minnesota Twins baseball team. At that time, the "Mall" was the second largest shopping and entertainment complex on the continent, exceeded in size only by the Edmonton Mall in Canada, both having been developed by the Triple Five Group, Ltd., a company of five brothers of the Ghermezian family. The "Mall of America", covering about 2.7 million square feet, is seven times the size of Yankee Stadium and is located in Bloomington, Minnesota, at the intersection of Interstate 494 and Highway 77, near the Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport. In its early years, customers from abroad took advantage of one-day shopping excursions promoted cooperatively by the Mall and the airlines.

The Mall of America

The warm oblivion and eternal present tense of the country's largest mall

Ian Frazier

Jul 1 2002

I used to fly in and out of Minneapolis-St. Paul all the time. When you come in to land there, or soon after you take off, usually you can see just to the south of the airport a huge shape battened to the earth like a Garfield doll stuck to the inside of a car window. The shape is the "Mall of America", the largest mall in the United States. It's basically a rectangle with four smaller rectangles at its corners, like Garfield's suction-cup paws. The four rectangles house Sears, Macy's, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's, the "anchor stores" of the Mall. As it clings, the spraddled shape seems to curve slightly with the earth's roundness.

Winona County (W3)

"WINONA", a city and the county-seat of "Winona county", Minnesota, U.S.A., about 95 m. S.E. of St Paul, on the W. bank of the Mississippi river, here crossed by three steel bridges. Pop. (1880) 10,208; (1890) 18, 208; (1900) 19,714, of whom 5000 were foreign-born and 30 negroes; (1910 census) 18,583. There are large German and Polish elements in the population; and German and Polish journals, besides two dailies in English, are published here. "Winona" is served by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, the Chicago Great Western, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul, the Green Bay & Western, and the Chicago & NorthWestern railways, and by river steamboat lines. It is picturesquely situated on a broad, level terrace, slightly elevated above the river, and surmounted by steep bluffs rising to 400-500 ft. At Winona are the Winona General Hospital (1894), to which is attached a Nurses' Training School; the first State Normal School (opened in 1860), and Winona Seminary (1894) for girls, conducted by the Sisters of Saint Francis. The city has a public library (about 30,000 vols.), with a mural decoration by Kenyon. Cox; a Federal building; a Masonic Temple; and several parks; and it owns its own water supply (operated by the Holly system). In 1905 the total value of the factory product was $7,850,236 (30.5% more than in 1900). The site of the city was frequently used as a landing place in the old fur-trading days, but was not permanently settled until about 1853.

Winona was first chartered as a city in 18J7. A large part of it was destroyed by fire in 1860. The name "Winona" is said to be a Sioux word meaning "first-born daughter".

History:

"Winona" is one of the few Native American personal names that have transferred over to other populations. This is thanks to its use by 19th-century white authors in their Romantic tales of the Native Americans. This includes: Mary Eastman’s 1849 Dahcotah: Life and Legends of the Sioux, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s 1855 poem The Song of "Hiawatha" (shamelessly mixing the Sioux name, which he spells "Wenonah", with Ojibway legends ), the 1881 poem "Winona" by H.L. Gordon (he says to pronounce it "wee-no-nah"), and an 1890 book by Eli Lundy Huggins called "Winona: a Dakota legend and other poems".

"Winona" slowly grew in popularity throughout the 19th century. During the 20th century it slowly declined, falling off the charts in the 1950s.

History

The name of the county is said to derive from a Dakota legend regarding a woman, referred to as "Winona", who was betrothed to marry a warrior whom she did not love. Rather than marry him, she is said to have leapt to her death from a rock now called "Maiden's Rock" on Lake Pepin. This legend is colloquially referred to as the "Winona legend".

"winona"

Origin

From a Sioux (Dakota or Lakota) term given as a name to first-born children if they were female.

John Koontz suggested that the name was a compound of "wi-" ("female") + "no" ("first") + "-na" (a diminutive suffix) and thus a reflex of the Proto-Siouan numeral "*ro/no" ("one"). That root is otherwise unattested in the Sioux languages, which use reflexes of "*wi(y)a" ("one") instead, and a more prosaic analysis identifies the first element of the name with "winyan" ("woman").
