Ball Pen (W3)

(E6)(L?) http://www.bicworld.com/

In France, in 1945, a man named "Marcel BICH", who had been the production manager for a French ink manufacturer, bought with his partner Edouard BUFFARD, a factory outside Paris and set up business as the maker of parts for fountain pens and mechanical lead pencils.

While his writing instruments parts business began to grow, the development of the ballpoint was advancing in both Europe and the United States and Marcel BICH saw the enormous potential for this new writing instrument.

After obtaining the patent rights to a ball pen created by Hungarian inventor, Ladislao BIRO, Marcel BICH introduced his own ball pen in December 1950. Touting his product as a reliable pen at an affordable price, he called it "BIC" a shortened, easy-to-remember version of his own name. The famous "BIC® CRISTAL® ballpoint pen" was born!

Ball Pen

(E?)(L?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_Pen

A "ballpoint pen" (also "biro", and "ball pen") is a writing instrument which dispenses a viscous ink from an internal reservoir through the rolling action of a metal ball at its point. This "ball point" may vary in diameter, and may be made of brass, steel, or tungsten carbide.

Originally conceived and developed as a cleaner and reliable alternative to quill and "fountain pens", "ballpoint pens" are now the dominant writing instrument. Millions are manufactured and sold every day, worldwide, with low-cost and ubiquity assuring that there is always a ballpoint pen within reach.

This so-called "invention that changed the way we write" has also influenced the way art is made; some professional artists use ballpoints to create fine artwork. A popular disposable model has gained recognition for its industrial design as part of the permanent collection at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Designer ballpoints are also produced for the high-end market by pen manufacturers, and prized by collectors.

History

The concept of using a ball point within a writing instrument as a method of applying ink to paper has existed since the late 19th century. In these inventions, the ink was placed in a thin tube whose end was blocked by a tiny ball, held so that it could not slip into the tube or fall out of the pen. The ink clung to the ball, which spun as the pen was drawn across the paper.

The first patent for a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October 1888, to John J. Loud, a leather tanner, who was attempting to make a writing instrument that would be able to write on his leather products, which then-common fountain pens could not. Loud's pen had a small rotating steel ball, held in place by a socket. Although it could be used to mark rough surfaces such as leather, as Loud intended, it proved to be too coarse for letter-writing. With no commercial viability, its potential went unexploited and the patent eventually lapsed. The manufacture of economical, reliable ballpoint pens as we know them arose from experimentation, modern chemistry, and precision manufacturing capabilities of the early 20th century. Patents filed worldwide during early development are testaments to failed attempts at making the pens commercially viable and widely available. Early ballpoints did not deliver the ink evenly; overflow and clogging were among the obstacles inventors faced toward developing reliable ballpoint pens. If the ball socket were too tight, or the ink too thick, it would not reach the paper. If the socket were too loose, or the ink too thin, the pen would leak or the ink would smear. Ink reservoirs pressurised by piston, spring, capillary action, and gravity would all serve as solutions to ink-delivery and flow problems.

László Bíró, a Hungarian newspaper editor frustrated by the amount of time that he wasted filling up fountain pens and cleaning up smudged pages, noticed that inks used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge free. He decided to create a pen using the same type of ink. Bíró enlisted the help of his brother György, a chemist, to develop viscous ink formulas for new ballpoint designs.

László's innovation successfully coupled ink-viscosity with a ball-socket mechanism which act compatibly to prevent ink from drying inside the reservoir while allowing controlled flow. Bíró filed a British patent on 15 June 1938.

In 1941 the Bíró brothers and a friend, Juan Jorge Meyne, fled Germany and moved to Argentina, where they formed Bíró Pens of Argentina and filed a new patent in 1943. Their pen was sold in Argentina as the "Birome" (portmanteau of the names "Bíró and Meyne"), which is how ballpoint pens are still known in that country. This new design was licensed by the British, who produced ball point pens for RAF aircrew as the Biro. Ballpoint pens were found to be more versatile than fountain pens, especially at high altitudes where fountain pens were prone to ink-leakage.

Conway Stewart Pens have been hand made in England since 1905 with British craftsmanship and the highest quality materials, including hallmarked solid 18ct gold and sterling silver. Conway Stewart fountain and rollerball pens have graced the finest hands to include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, British Prime Ministers and US Presidents.

pencil something in (W3)

"to pencil something in" = "vorläufig vormerken".

"Jaspisware", dt.

Engl. "wedge" bezeichnet einen dt. "Keil", so daß engl. "wedgwood" mit dt. "Keilholz" übersetzt werden kann.

Wedgwood in the 20th century at Barlaston, Staffordshire

In 1936, the Wedgwood company took the momentous decision to move from the old Etruria works in Stoke-on-Trent to a 'green field' site south of the main Potteries area, near the village of Barlaston. Josiah Wedgwood V purchased over 380 acres there and developed an ultra-modern factory. The electric firing of the ware using double-tunnel ovens designed by Brown-Boveri was unique.

Wedgwood DKP Collection

The Wedgwood DKP Collection is a range of classical writing instruments in the style of "Wedgwood Jasper". Jasperware is a fine-grained, unglazed stoneware that was introduced by the English potter "Josiah Wedgwood" in the mid-1700s. Its name derives from the fact that it resembles the natural stone "Jasper" in its hardness. It is generally decorated in the neoclassical style. The fountain pen in this exquisite collection is enhanced with a smooth, gold-plated, medium width nib, cartridge/converter fill (converter is included).

Wedgwood Glass: A short explanation

"Wedgwood Glass" and later (from the mid 70s) "Wedgwood Crystal", were the names used for the output of King's Lynn glassworks in the UK after it was taken over by the "Wedgwood Group" in 1969.

Ronald Stennett-Willson, one of the most prominent UK post-war glass designers, had established King's Lynn Glass in 1967, and continued as Managing Director and chief designer of "Wedgwood Glass" until he reached retirement age in 1980. He had been closely involved with the Swedish glass industry during the 1950s, and his designs at King's Lynn had the clean functional lines associated with post-war Scandinavian design.

Klassisch englisches Wedgwood Porzellan

Thermometer (Wedgewoodsches) | Wedgwood | Wedgwoods Pyrometer

"Wedgwood" (franz.

Wedgwoods Pyrometer, s. Wärmemesser.

(E?)(L?) http://www.virtual-modell.de/modellpferde/breyer/dekofarben.html

Yard-O-Led - Stifte (W3)

Der Markenname engl. "Yard-O-Led" = dt. "ein Yard Blei" ("A Yard of Lead") geht auf die Füllmenge des Drehbleistifts zurück, den das Familienunternehmen Anfang des 20. Jh. auf den Markt brachte. Der Drehbleistift konnte 12 Minen mit der Länge 3 Inch aufnehmen. Dies entspricht der Gesamtlänge von einem Yard (1 Inch = 25,4 mm, 1 Yard = 914,4 mm) (12*3*25,4 = 914,4).

The Yard-O-Led Pencil Company is a British company founded in 1934. The founder invented the mechanical pencil which holds and propells twelve three inch leads. Hence the name "Yard-O-Led" — known fondly to fanciers as "YOL".

In 1822, the first ever propelling pencil was invented and patented by a man called Sampson Mordan. Through into the next century his family-run business continued to develop the unique design of carrying "twelve three inch leads" inside the barrel. It is from this feature that the name "Yard-O-Led" evolved. In 1934 the Yard-O-Led Company was founded by a Mr Brenner and has continued the traditions of craftsmanship and excellence established over 170 years ago.
