JESSIE. (Polyantha.)
An ideal rose for bedding, massing, or for pot culture. The flowers are produced in large clusters, and their bright; cherry crimson colouring does not fade. The plant is of dwarf habit and requires very little pruning. Introduced in 1909, it will become very popular when better known.. One of the best of this colour in the Polyantha section.

Polyantha roses are characterized by sprays of delicate flowers held above the foliage. This class of roses is the result of crossing climbing varieties of a species rose (Rosa multiflora) and \'Old Blush\', a China rose.

The first dwarf Polyanthas were perpetual-flowering dwarfs of R.multiflora crossed with a dwarf China. These were hardy and floriferous, but small-flowered and without scent. In around 1910 the Danish breeder Poulsen began to cross dwarf Polyanthas with Hybrid Teas to try to introduce more hardiness into Hybrid Teas. These were called Poulsen roses, or Hybrid Polyanthas. Few of these survive today, having been overtaken by the Floribundas which were derived from them.

Polyantha roses were popular around 1900, but they have been losing ground to more modern rose classes in recent years. They are the parents of the popular floribunda class and thus, indirectly, of the grandifloras. They are still actively used in breeding.

These are generally smaller but sturdy, compact re-bloomers that form bushy shrubs with many small (1-inch), delicate flowers in large sprays.

Wonderful sprays of small double flowers cover these plants in season. These varieties are mostly vigorous growing, well foliated, prolific blooming all season long, disease-resistant, winter hardy and spreading. The only attribute they lack is fragrance, although there are a couple of varieties that are fragrant. One of the best, most useful roses ever created is a "Polyantha" called "The Fairy", which is so good it belongs in every garden.

"In 1869, Guillot fils of Lyon, France, sowed seed from "R. multiflora" "Polyantha", a large shrub introduced from Japan around 1862, with clusters of single, white, fragrant blossoms. From this, he obtained a large crop of much varied seedlings; "I didn't have so many as two which resembled their mother!" said he.

Polyantha Roses
The Polyantha class was the result of crossing china roses with the rambling Japanese Multiflora rose. The everblooming characteristic and compact shape are two traits seen in this class. Polyanathas are hardy, disease resistant and floriferous. Their dwarf and compact nature lends themselves well when used as low borders, mass plantings or in containers.
