Carr, Philip (Author)
A Glossary of Phonology

Paperback: 216 pages
Publisher: Edinburgh University Press (February 1, 2009)
Language: English

Review
Phil Carr's A Glossary of Phonology is an extremely useful piece of work. The terms selected are essential for anyone wishing to become acquainted with the fields of contemporary phonology and phonetics. The definitions are clear and compact with many internal cross-references. Not only does it offer definitions for the standard terms used in modern phonology and phonetics, but it also covers aspects of historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, bilingualism, and the philosophy of science. It also provides short biographies for some of the key players in the field. In a nutshell, it is a reference work useful for a large audience, from students to professionals in neighbouring disciplines. Even specialists in phonology and phonetics will refine their understanding of some concepts and may realise that their area of research has moved on and that assumptions taken for granted a decade ago are no longer accepted by other specialists in their field. Readers of modern works in phonology need access to the classical terminology of structuralism and generative linguistics but also to that of statistical approaches, usage-based models, cognitive linguistics and other frameworks. All this is provided by Phil Carr's glossary in a satisfying way. -- Jacques Durand, Professor of Linguistics, University of Toulouse and CNRS Phil Carr's A Glossary of Phonology is an extremely useful piece of work. Produktinfo
The present volume contains a selection of the papers and commentaries which were originally presented at the Tenth Conference of Laboratory Phonology (LabPhon10) held in Paris from June 29 to July 1, 2006. The theme of the volume is Variation, Phonetic Detail and Phonological Representation. It brings together specialists of different fields of speech research with the goal to discuss the relevance of patterns of variation and phonetic details on phonological representations and theories. The topic is addressed from the angles of speech production, perception, acquisition, speech disorders, and language universals.

The contributions are grouped thematically in five sections, each of which is commented by invited discussants. Section I contains the contributions to the special '10th anniversary session' of the conference which represent in a prototypical way some of the different research questions that have been at the core of important debates over the last 20 years in the laboratory phonology community. Issues of phonological universals and language typology are addressed in section II. In section III, the notions of variation and phonetic detail are examined with regard to how they are acquired and dealt with in the formation of phonological representation in emerging systems. Section IV focuses on recent work at the crossroad between normal and disordered speech.

Laboratory Phonology 8

Gebundene Ausgabe: 675 Seiten
Verlag: Gruyter; Auflage: 1. A. (20. Juni 2006)
Sprache: Englisch

The Eighth Conference on Laboratory Phonology (held in New Haven, CT) continued the series' tradition of bringing together experts from different subfields by inviting papers on the phonology of signed and spoken languages. A major goal of this topic was to begin to uncover the nature of the human phonological capacity that underlies both types of systems. Several papers on signed phonology and comparisons of signed and spoken phonologies are included in this volume. Other papers address the categorical and variable aspects of phonological systems (both spoken and signed), the acquisition of such systems, and their role in guiding speech production.
