Cigarette (W3)

"Cigarette" als Farbe: - #673923 - Cigarette

Die "Zigarre", engl. "cigar" entstammt dem span. "cigarro".

Engl. "cigarette" (1835), dt. "Zigarette" ist die Verkleinerungsform von frz. "cigare" = dt. "Zigarre" und geht zurück auf span. "cigarro" = dt. "Zigarre".

A "cigarette" is distinguished from a "cigar" by its smaller size (hence the name), use of processed leaf, and paper wrapping; cigars are typically composed entirely of whole leaf tobacco.
Cigarettes were largely unknown in the English-speaking world before the Crimean War, when British soldiers began emulating their Ottoman Empire comrades, who resorted to rolling their tobacco with newsprint.

nicotine, nicotinic, nicotiana, Nicot (W3)

NOUN: A colorless, poisonous alkaloid, C10H14N2, derived from the tobacco plant and used as an insecticide. It is the substance in tobacco to which smokers can become addicted.
ETYMOLOGY: French, from New Latin "nicotiana".

ADJECTIVE: 1. Of or relating to nicotine. 2. Of or relating to niacin.

(E1)(L1) https://www.bartleby.com/81/12079.html

"Nicotine" is so named from "Jean Nicot", Lord of Villemain, who purchased some tobacco at Lisbon in 1560, introduced it into France, and had the honour of fixing his name on the plant. Our word "tobacco" is from the Indian "tabaco" (the tube used by the Indians for inhaling the smoke).

(E1)(L1) http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=nicotine

"nicotine", "poisonous alkaloid found in tobacco leaves," 1819, from Fr. "nicotine", from Mod.L. "Nicotiana", formal botanical name for the tobacco plant, named for "Jean Nicot" (c.1530-1600), Fr. ambassador to Portugal, who sent tobacco seeds and powdered leaves back to France 1561. His name is a dim. of Nicolas.

"How Nicotine Works" by Ann Meeker-O'Connell
Inside This Article Q: Nicotine makes up what percentage of a tobacco plant?
A: Nicotine normally makes up about 5 percent of a tobacco plant by weight.

For thousands of years, people have smoked or chewed the leaves of the tobacco plant, "Nicotiana tabacum". Tobacco was first found and cultivated in the Americas, perhaps as early as 6000 B.C. Following the discovery and colonization of North and South America, the tobacco plant was exported widely, to continental Europe and the rest of the civilized world. Even in its early days, tobacco use was controversial. Some hailed its medicinal properties. For example, tobacco was supposed to be protective against the ravages of the Plague! As early as the 1600s, people speculated that there might be a link between diseases, like cancer, and tobacco use. Since then, modern research methods have provided evidence of this link, and public service announcements that warn of tobacco's health risks and addictive nature are seen regularly on TV.

torch (W3)

Engl. "*torca", lat. "torqua", lat. "torques" = "Halskette aus gedrehtem Metall", lat. "torquere" = "drehen", "verflechten". (Im Deutschen findet man z.B. "torkeln".)

In England übertrug man engl.
