"British Library", national library of Great Britain, formed by the "British Library Act" (1972) and organized by July 1, 1973. For much of the 20th century its holdings were divided among the "British Museum library" (with some 12 million volumes) and several other buildings, but in 1997-98 a new complex was opened in London near St. Pancras Station in order to unify its vast collections. The British Library holds more than 25 million printed books as well as hundreds of thousands of periodicals, microfilms, rare manuscripts, and titles in electronic form. Its special offerings include the "Oriental and India Office Collections" (transferred from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1982), the "National Sound Archive" (formerly the British Institute of Recorded Sound, incorporated into the library in 1983), printed music, a map library, and philatelic materials.

The Origins of Text-Speak, from 1828?
August 20, 2010
By Ben Zimmer
A new exhibit at the "British Library" on the evolution of English will feature some linguistic play that presages the age of "text-speak." As reported by The Guardian, the exhibit will display a comic poem printed in 1867 with lines like "I wrote 2 U B 4" ("I wrote to you before"). I've investigated this proto-text-speak and have found similar versified examples going all the way back to 1828. [Update: And see the note below for one from 1813!]

Bodleian Library (W3)
Oxford professors and students refer to the library as "Bodley" or simply "The Bod".

Bradford's Law (W3)
Engl. "Bradford's Law" = dt.
- "Bradford's Law of Scattering"
- "Power Law"
- "Zipf’s Law"
- "Lotka’s Law"
...
Anwendungsbereiche des Bradford’s Law of Scattering:
- 1. Zeitschriftenerwerbung
- 2. Zeitschriftennutzung
- 3. Zitation („Garfield’ s Law of Concentration“ )
- 4. Interdisziplinaritätsbestimmung
- 5. Rechercheausgabe (Bradfordizing)
- 6. Erfassung von Zeitschriften in Bibliografien
- (Literaturdokumentation)
- 7. Entstehung neuer Zeitschriften
- 8. Entstehung neuer Sachgebiete

Bradford's law
Definition: Journals in a field can be divided into three parts, each with about one-third of all articles: 1) a core of a few journals, 2) a second zone, with more journals, and 3) a third zone, with the bulk of journals. The number of journals is 1:n:n².
Note: Bradford formulated his law after studying a bibliography of geophysics, covering 326 journals in the field. He discovered that 9 journals contained 429 articles, 59 contained 499 articles, and 258 contained 404 articles. Although Bradford's Law is not statistically accurate, librarians commonly use it as a guideline.
(E?)(L?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford's_law
Bradford's law is a pattern first described by Samuel C. Bradford in 1934 that estimates the exponentially diminishing returns of extending a search for references in science journals. One formulation is that if journals in a field are sorted by number of articles into three groups, each with about one-third of all articles, then the number of journals in each group will be proportional to 1:n:n². There are a number of related formulations of the principle.

Synopsis
Nobody photographs the splendid and intimate cathedrals of knowledge as beautifully as Candida Hofer. This superbly produced volume contains Hofer's famously ascetic images of the Escorial in Spain, the Whitney Museum and the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, Villa Medici in Rome and the Hamburg University Library, among others. Umberto Eco contributes an essay on libraries.
