Die "Rosa foetida" ("Rosa foetida var. bicolor Willmott", "Rosa Eglanteria") wird gelegentlich auch "Türkische Rose" genannt.Der Name der Rose "Rosa Eglanteria" basiert auf frz. "églantine" = dt. "wilde Rose", "Heckenrose".
Bei Adelung findet man:
Der "Riechdorn", des -es, plur. die -en, in einigen Gegenden, eine Art wilder Rosen mit wohl riechenden Blättern, welche auf der untern Seite rostfarbig sind; "Wichdorn", "Rosa eglanteria Tabern".

Die gut winterharte "Rosa foetida" ist in Kleinasien bis zum Nordwest-Himalaya beheimatet. Aus ihren Abarten entstanden die gelben und orangefarbenen Gartenrosen. Die sehr frühe und reiche Blüte zeichnet diese Rosen aus. Die kleinen Blätter sind mit duftenden Drüsen besetzt.
