Hermitage Days - 2009

The Hermitage has turned 245! In 1764 Catherine II acquired 225 seventeenth-century European paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernest Gotzkowski, which laid the foundation of the Hermitage collection. Traditionally the celebration of the museum's foundation is timed to the Day of St Catherine (7 December) and held in the first decade of December. In the course of these days the State Hermitage offers gifts to all of its friends. In 2009 it opens renovated permanent displays "Art and Culture of the Northern Black Sea Coast" and "Art of Dagestan in the 14th - Early 20th Centuries" as well as a temporary exhibition "Enamels of the World. 1700-2000. From the Khalili Collection". "Hermitage in Photographs" and "Hermitage in Publications" give an account of the museum's activities.
