Konstanza (W3)
Dt. "Konstanza", rum. "Constanta", (zu griechischer Zeit "Tomis", zu römischer Zeit "Constantiniana"), ist eine rumänische Hafenstadt, Hauptstadt des Bezirks "Constanta", am Schwarzen Meer. Die Stadt war Verbannungsort Ovids. Von 1413 bis 1878 war sie türkisch, seither rumänisch.

Ab 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Die auf dem Gebiet der heutigen souveränen Staaten Rumänien und Moldawien lebenden Geten und Daker betreiben Eisenverhüttung und -verarbeitung zu Waffen, Arbeitsgeräten und Schmuck.
Etwa ab dieser Zeit gründen Griechen entlang der nordwestlichen Schwarzmeerküste die Stadtstaaten Istros (heute Histria im Donaudelta; 657), Tomis (heute Constanta; 550) und Kallatis (heute Mangalia nahe der Grenze zu Bulgarien) und beginnen, mit den geto-dakischen Stämmen Handel zu treiben. Die Griechen bringen Wein, Öl und andere Luxusartikel ins Land, während diese dafür Getreide, Honig, Wachs und Sklaven erhalten.

Bei einem durch Schweißarbeiten an einem Öltank ausgelösten Brand auf einem unter maltesischer Flagge fahrenden Tanker kommen im rumänischen Schwarzmeer-Hafen Constanta zwölf Seeleute ums Leben.

City Highlights
Situated at the crossroads of several commercial routes, Constanta lies on the western coast of the Black Sea, 185 miles from the Bosphorus Strait. An ancient metropolis and Romania's largest sea port, "Constanta" traces its history some 2,500 years. Originally called "Tomis", legend has it that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece.
Founded by Greek colonists from Miletos in the 6th century BC, "Tomis" was conquered by the Romans in 71 BC and renamed "Constantiana" by Roman Emperor "Constantine the Great" in honor of his sister. The name was shortened to "Constanta" during the Ottoman era. During the 13th century, Italy, especially Genoese merchants, dominated the Black Sea and Constanta flourished, only to decline two centuries later under Turkish rule.

The city of "Constanta", today a large port at the Black Sea, is actually the old town of "Tomis". Constanta is the capital city of the county by the same name. It was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century B.C. It flourished under the Roman sway. Tomis was rebuilt by "Constantin the Great" who changed its name to "Constantiana" (from which the present name of the city has been derived), in honour of his sister.
