"Kamala" oder "Kamela" ist indischen Ursprungs; die außerdem früher in Europa gebrauchte Bezeichnung "Kapila-podi" soll aus dem Sanskrit stammen und "roten Staub" bedeuten ("Kapila" = "mattrot", "podi" = "Staub").
