Die Weißen werden in Neuseeland "Pakeha" genannt nach dem Maori-Wort für "hellhäutig".
Die Amtssprachen sind Englisch und Maori, wobei Maori in erster Linie bei traditionellen Zeremonien oder Ritualen verwendet wird. Viele Wörter aus der Maorisprache wurden in den englischen Wortschatz der Neuseeländer übernommen. So bezeichnet das Wort "Kiwi" eine Vogelart, die mittlerweile zum nationalen Wahrzeichen avanciert ist; die Weißen werden "Pakeha" genannt nach dem Maori-Wort für "hellhäutig".

Maori (a Malayo-Polynesian Austronesian language of the indigenous Polynesian inhabitants of New Zealand) has contributed many words to New Zealand English and a limited number to world-wide English usage.
