"Albert Town" is located to the east of Wanaka in Otago, New Zealand. Until recently only a farming settlement, the population boom in this area has led to much new development. The confluence of the Clutha and Hawea Rivers is located here. The town was named after "Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha". "Albert Town" was formerly called "Newcastle".

Rose garden

Over time, the Rose Garden has undergone many changes, with major design alterations in the 1950s and more recently in the late 1980s, when motorway realignment changed the landscape of the western corner of the lower garden.

The present Rose Garden was opened in October 1989 and now includes areas for species, old fashioned and modern roses.

The Rose Garden is divided into three main sections - Species roses, Old Garden roses and Modern roses. Peak flowering time is from November to late February.

The Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland founded "Dunedin" at the head of Otago Harbour in 1848 as the principal town of its special settlement. The name comes from "Dùn Èideann", the Scottish Gaelic name for "Edinburgh", the capital of Scotland. Charles Kettle the city's surveyor, instructed to emulate the characteristics of Edinburgh, produced a striking, 'Romantic' design. The result was both grand and quirky streets as the builders struggled and sometimes failed to construct his bold vision across the challenging landscape. Captain William Cargill, a veteran of the war against Napoleon, was the secular leader. The Reverend Thomas Burns, a nephew of the poet Robert Burns, was the spiritual guide.
