Maki-e (W3)

Best of the Best 2012: Pens: Handpainted: Loiminchay Bodhisattva
John Lyon
JUNE 01, 2012
The Asian decorative art of "maki-e" is an ancient one, involving intricate designs created from thin layers of gold dust (or other metallic powder) coated in lacquer from an urushi tree. During the last century, the technique was embraced by makers of fine writing instruments, including Loiminchay. Its Bodhisattva collection is the third in the 11-year-old company’s line of maki-e writing instruments inspired by Buddhism. Each pen in the two-pen set depicts a bodhisattva—represented as a 1,000-handed enlightened being—on its barrel. The design is based on ancient Chinese cave carvings, and the intricate nature of the artwork, including the rendering of the bodhisattva’s many individually posed hands, results in an extremely long production time. The first examples took more than two years to complete; thus, the $91,000 set will be limited to just 18 examples worldwide. (212.941.7488, www.loiminchay.com)

NAKAYA - Japanese Handmade Fountain Pens

Welcome to Nakaya, your handmade fountain pen shop introducing some of the finest Japanese nib craftsmen in the world. Each one of our craftsmen worked for "Platinum Pen Company" for more than 40 years and is now retired. All are masters of the fountain pen manufacturing process. For years the great Platinum factory craftsmen have put on "traveling clinics" at many large department stores and fountain pen shops all over Japan. Their pens were available only through mail order. After years of planning and conducting pen shows, we decided to launch our website and show the world our handmade fountain pen craftsmanship.

As for the name of 'NAKAYA FOUNTAIN PEN', the name "NAKAYA" is the original name given to "Platinum Pen Company" when it was founded in 1919. The name "NAKAYA" represents the utmost in quality. Our mission is to design a perfect pen for your hand and for your hand only. Each person writes differently and with our site we hope to enlighten you to the wonders and glories of fountain pen writing, and personalized designing.

Pilot - Stifte (W3)

Die Maschinenbauer Ryosuke NAMIKI und Masao WADA hatten, neben der Begeisterung für Schreibgeräte, das Meer als gemeinsame Passion. Als Referenz auf das Flaggschiff der Flotte nannten Sie ihre Firma "PILOT PEN Co Ltd" , später "PILOT CORPORATION".

A 90 year history

The first PILOT pens were launched in Japan in 1918. At this time, the country was opening up to Western influences and was importing European techniques.

Trade agreements and contracts were being signed and the Japanese whose writing was poorly suited to the demands of commercial trade quickly had to simplify the lines of their characters and adopt international calligraphy standards. Many pen manufacturers were set up in Japan during this time.

Ryosuke NAMIKI, a mechanical engineer and professor at the Tokyo Merchant Marine Collage, was captivated by the ingenuity of these fountain pens which his contemporaries called "10,000 year brushes" because of their uninterrupted ink flow. However, at the same time Ryosuke NAMIKI remained convinced about their imperfections.

Using his skills in industrial engineering, he created a high quality prototype. After forming a partnership with one of his colleagues, Masao WADA, he created the NAMIKI MANUFACTURING COMPANY and started producing fountain pens.

As a tribute to their other shared passion, the sea, the pair used the brand name PILOT, referring to the fleet's flagship.

In 1938 the company became the PILOT PEN Co Ltd, then in 1989 the PILOT CORPORATION, a modern name covering the decades of creativity, innovation and design which have enabled the PILOT brand to position itself as the world leader in writing instrument technology.

Sailor History

In 1911, founder Kyugoro Sakata was introduced to an English fountain pen by his sailor friend. His enthusiasm for the writing instrument led him to establish the "Sakata-Manufactory" factory to produce fountain pens. In 1948, he introduced the first ballpoint pen to Japan. Sailor obtained the very first patent for cartridge-type fountain pens in 1954. A few years later, the current name of "Sailor Pen Co, Ltd" was adopted.

Inspired by a British Sailor who was visiting Mr. Kyogoro Sakata, in 1911 he founded the company Hiroshima, Japan becoming the first company to manufacture fountain pens in Japan.

The fountain pens are known for the quality of their nibs, which are made at the Sailor factory. Master nib designed Nobuyoshi Nagahara has over 60 years with Sailor Pens, and has trained his son, Yukio in the skills of nib design and production.

The regular line of nibs range from Extra Fine, Fine, Medium-Fine, Medium, Broad, Zoom and the Music widths. In addition to these, there is a line of nibs specific designed for the more exclusive line of pens that Sailor produces.

From the reports I have read, the Fine produces a finer line than pens produced in Europe and the Sailor Extra Fine is said to create a writing line that similar to some of the fine pens produced in the 1920's.

Zebra Pen - Stifte (W3)

Zebra Pen Corp. USA

(E?)(L?) http://www.zebrapen.com/about/international-offices

About Zebra

Zebra Pen Corporation was founded in New York in August 1982 as an independent corporation wholly owned by Zebra Co. Ltd., of Tokyo, Japan.

The Zebra trademark was adopted in 1914. Legend has it that Mr. Ishikawa, founder of Zebra Co. Ltd., wanted a company name that would be memorable and also appropriate for their export business to other countries. He took an English/Japanese dictionary and, opening it Japanese style from the back, started with the "Z" words. He stopped at "Zebra".

Upon further research, Mr. Ishikawa found that zebras are gentle animals with a strong family herding instinct. This was an important attribute, since he wanted to build a business in which employees and customers were all part of a family-like culture. The fact that the zebra looks like it is decorated with large calligraphic pen strokes may have also appealed to the visual image he was seeking.

The name "Zebra" is as unique as the products we sell. Zebra Pen Corporation offers an extensive line of writing instruments including ball point pens, highlighters, mechanical pencils, gel rollers, and correction pens. We stand behind our name and guarantee quality, satisfaction and an ultimate writing performance.
