Die "Gammaastronomie" heißt auch "Gammastrahlenastronomie". Und diese kümmert sich um die "Gammastrahlen" = "3. elektrische und magnetische, nicht ablenkbare Komponente der radioaktiven Strahlung".
Der Gammabereich schließt bei einer Wellenlänge von 0,01 nm an den Röntgenbereich an. Er ist zu kürzeren Wellenlängen nicht begrenzt. Gammastrahlung wird vollständig von der Atmosphäre absorbiert.
Die Strahlung höchster Energie, die kosmische Strahlung bzw. ihre Folgeprodukte können optisch als Tscherenkow-Strahlung sowie als hochenergetische Teilchen mit Zählrohren auf der Erde detektiert werden.
