Background:
Originally settled by Arawak Indians, Curacao was seized by the Dutch in 1634 along with the neighboring island of Bonaire. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, Curacao was hard hit economically by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of the Isla Refineria to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. In 1954, Curacao and several other Dutch Caribbean possessions were reorganized as the Netherlands Antilles, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In referenda in 2005 and 2009, the citizens of Curacao voted to become a self-governing country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The change in status became effective in October 2010 with the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles.

Economy ::Curacao

Economy - overview:

Tourism, petroleum refining, and offshore finance are the mainstays of this small economy, which is closely tied to the outside world. Although GDP grew slightly during the past decade, the island enjoys a high per capita income and a well-developed infrastructure compared with other countries in the region. Curacao has an excellent natural harbor that can accommodate large oil tankers. The Venezuelan state oil company leases the single refinery on the island from the government; most of the oil for the refinery is imported from Venezuela; most of the refined products are exported to the US. Almost all consumer and capital goods are imported, with the US, Brazil, Italy, and Mexico being the major suppliers. The government is attempting to diversify its industry and trade and has signed an Association Agreement with the EU to expand business there. Poor soils and inadequate water supplies hamper the development of agriculture. Budgetary problems complicate reform of the health and pension systems for an aging population.

"Curaçao" is a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the laraha citrus fruit, grown on the island of "Curaçao". A non-native plant similar to an orange, the laraha developed from the sweet Valencia orange transplanted by Spanish explorers. The nutrient-poor soil and arid climate of Curaçao proved unsuitable to Valencia cultivation, resulting in small bitter fruit on the trees. But the aromatic peel maintained much of the essence of the Valencia varietal, and the trees were eventually bred into the current laraha cultivar, whose fruits remain inedibly bitter.

Etymologie

Over de oorsprong van de naam "Curaçao" bestaan verschillende theorieën:

Een legende is dat eind 15e eeuw gedurende een van Christoffel Columbus' reizen een aantal Portugese zeelieden scheurbuik opliepen. Omdat het vooruitzicht dat ze op zee zouden sterven en hun lichamen overboord gegooid zouden worden ze tegenstond, vroegen ze om op een van de nabijgelegen eilanden afgezet te worden. Na het eten van het plaatselijke citrusfruit met een overvloed aan het toen nog onbekende vitamine C herstelden ze volledig. Toen Columbus' schepen een aantal maanden laten weer langs de eilanden voeren verbaasden de zeelieden hun oude maatjes door ze vanaf het strand toe te wuiven. Sindsdien werd het eiland "Curaçao" genoemd, naar "cura" het Portugese woord voor genezing.

Een andere gangbare verklaring is dat het is afgeleid van het Portugese woord voor hart, "coração", wat zou verwijzen naar het eiland als een centrum van handel. Dit werd dan door Spanjaarden overgenomen als "Curaçao", wat werd gevolgd door de Nederlanders.

Een andere uitleg is dat "Curaçao" verwant is met de naam die de oorspronkelijke inwoners gebruikten om zichzelf mee aan te duiden. Deze theorie wordt ondersteund door vroege Spaanse reisverslagen, die de inboorlingen aanduidden als "Indios Curaçaos".

De naam "Curaçao" heeft een associatie gekregen met een specifieke blauwtint, en wordt soms gebruikt als een bijvoeglijk naamwoord, afkomstig van een diepblauwe likeur met de naam blauwe Curaçao.
