Adney, Edwin Tappau, amerikan. Illustrator und Maler, geb. 13.7.1868 in Athens, Ohio. Erhielt seine Erziehung in New York und North Carolina. Seine bekanntesten Arbeiten sind seine Illustrationen zu Chapmans Handbook of the Birds of Eastern North America. Als das Goldfieber Tausende von Menschen nach dem Klondike rief, war er dort 1897-98 Berichterstatter fur Harpers Magazine und hat durch seine illustrierten Artikel uber den Klondike das Land am meisten bekannt gemacht. gold ring

My great, great, great, great grandfather was a tin miner in Cornwall. He went to the klondike during the America gold rush to find gold. This ring is made from a nugget of gold which he sent back to relatives. This has been passed down through my family to my mum.

Klondike & Yukon Both Stem from Gwich’in Word for River

The place names "Klondike" and "Yukon" both contain a Gwich’in word for "river". The "Gwich’in", formerly spelled "Kutchin" or "Gwitchin" in English, are an Athapaskan people living today in 15 small villages in Canada ’s Yukon and in northern Alaska. About 7,000 Gwich’in people remain, but only about 800 speak their native Athapaskan tongue.

"Klondike" derives from the name of a local river in the Gwich’in language where "thron-dyuk" means "Hammer River". The Gwich’in people hammered stakes into the river shallows to trap salmon. And of course we know the creeks and streams of this tributary of the Yukon River, particularly "Bonanza Creek", carried gold that was discovered on August 17, 1896, thus setting off the "Klondike Gold Rush". The popular poems of Robert W. Service helped make the word "Klondike" famous wherever English was read.

"Klondike": tributary of the Yukon River in northwestern Canada, from Kutchin (Athabaskan) "throndiuk", said to mean "hammer-water" and to be a reference to the practice of driving stakes into the riverbed to support fish traps. Scene of a gold rush after 1896.

Imaginez un petit village de bois, dont les rues sont arpentées par des femmes en robe longue et des filles de joie, sentez la fraicheur des forêts de conifères, du vent froid du Nord. C’est un peu le décor dans lequel Charmian a évolué, peu après son mariage avec le célebrissime Jack London, qui aura lui-même énormément écrit sur la Ruée vers l’Or de la fin du 19ème siècle, au Klondike. Mais parce qu’elle ne définit pas seulement par sa relation avec London, Charmian mérite un article à elle seule.

Le secteur de la rivière Fortymile fait partie du territoire ancestral des Hän. Les "Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in", un sous-groupe des Hän, avaient coutume d’y venir pour chasser, pêcher, piéger et se rassembler. Ils avaient aussi établi un camp de pêche saisonnier à l’embouchure de la "Klondike". Ils étaient de très bons commerçants, et s’adonnaient au troc ou à la vente de marchandises avec d’autres groupes autochtones et les Blancs nouvellement arrivés.

À l’été de 1896, le Yukon n’était encore qu’un district des Territoires du Nord-Ouest, gouverné depuis Regina et dont les frontières faisaient l’objet d’un litige avec les États-Unis. Quelques postes de traite de taille modeste étaient disséminés le long du fleuve Yukon.
