Europeana: think culture

Europeana.eu is about ideas and inspiration. It links you to 4.6 million digital items. Some of these are world famous, others are hidden treasures from Europe's Here is a list of the organisations that our content comes from. They include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the British Library in London and the Louvre in Paris.

You can use My Europeana to save searches or bookmark things. You can highlight stuff and add it to your own folders.

This website is a prototype. Europeana Version 1.0 is being developed and will launch in 2010 with links to over 10 million digital objects.

Europeana.eu is funded by the European Commission and the member states.

(E?)(L?) http://www.europeana.eu/portal/partners.html

Partners - Sector Partner

This is the network of partners who collaborated to make Europeana happen, and who represent Europeana in their countries and professional associations. Contributors - Country Contributor

These are the organisations that are contributing content - digitised paintings, books, broadcasts etc. Some of these contributors are aggregators*, Culture.fr is the largest aggregator, providing content from about 480 organisations in France, including the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay. The number of organisations contributing to an aggregator is shown in brackets after the aggregator’s name, e.g. Videoactive (10)

*An aggregator collects material from a range of other contributors, displays it on their own website and also channels it into Europeana.

The European Library (TEL)

(E3)(L1) http://www.theeuropeanlibrary.org/

The European Library is for searching the content of European national libraries.
What is The European Library?
The European Library is a portal which offers access to the combined resources (books, magazines, journals.... - both digital and non-digital) of the 45 national libraries of Europe. It offers free searching and delivers digital objects - some free, some priced.

(E?)(L?) http://www.theeuropeanlibrary.org/portal/organisation/about_us/aboutus_en.html#what_is_the_european_library

"The European Library" ("TEL") is a free service that offers access to the resources of the 48 national libraries of Europe in 35 languages. Resources can be both digital (books, posters, maps, sound recordings, videos, etc.) and bibliographical . Quality and reliability are guaranteed by the 48 collaborating national libraries of Europe.

What is a national library?
A national library is the library specifically established by a country to store its information database. National libraries usually host the legal deposit and the bibliographic control centre of a nation.
...
Who is involved in The European Library?
The 48 European national libraries participating in The European Library are all members of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL), a foundation aiming at increasing and reinforcing the role of national libraries in Europe. Members of CENL are the national librarians of the Council of Europe Member States:

Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy - Florence, Italie - Rome, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania , Luxembourg, "The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia - Moscow, Russia - St. Petersbourg, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the Vatican City.
...

The Gate to Europe's knowledge
"The European Library" ("TEL") is a co-operative project of eight European national libraries along with ICCU, the Italian central cataloguing institution, established under the aegis of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL).

At its recent meeting in Vilnius on 29th September 2003, the CENL representing 42 national libraries in Europe adopted a resolution supporting plans for the creation of a new pan-European library service. To be called "The European Library", this service will provide resource discovery facilities aimed at researchers and informed citizens. It will offer integrated access to the collections of the national libraries of Europe alongside information about the libraries themselves.
