I. INTRODUCTION

The idea that our universe is in some sense mathematical goes back to the Pythagoreans, and has been extensively discussed in the literature. Galileo Galilei stated that the Universe is a grand book written in the language of mathematics, and Wigner reflected on the “unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences”. In this essay, I will push this idea to its extreme and argue that our universe is mathematics in a well-defined sense. After elaborating on this hypothesis and underlying assumptions in Section II, I discuss a variety of its implications in Sections III-VII. This paper can be thought of as the sequel to one I wrote in 1996, clarifying and extending the ideas described therein.

Gutenbergs Meisterwerk, die 42zeilige Bibel

Als Krönung von Gutenbergs Druckkunst ist die 42zeilige Bibel (B 42) anzusehen. Das zweibändige Werk mit insgesamt 1282 Seiten entstand in der Blüte seines Schaffens mit Hilfe von etwa 20 Mitarbeitern. Gutenberg hat für diese Bibel 290 verschiedene Figuren gegossen. Die farbigen Initialen und Zeichen wurden später von einem Illuminator und einem Rubrikator eingefügt.Von den 180 Exemplaren waren vermutlich 150 auf Papier und die verbleibenden 30 auf kostbarerem Pergament gedruckt. Heute existieren noch 48 Exemplare, wovon zwei im Besitz des Gutenberg-Museums sind. Mit dieser Bibel, die bis heute zu den schönsten gedruckten Büchern der Welt gehört, hat Gutenberg bewiesen, daß die "nova forma scribendi" den Handschriften, die damals ihre Hoch-Zeit hatten, ästhetisch gleichwertig war. Die Entwicklung der Schwarzen Kunst brachte einen Umbruch in der Schriftwelt. Die Verbreitung von Wissen und wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen förderte auch den wirtschaftlichen Fortschritt und wurde zu einem Meilenstein in Richtung Neuzeit.

Gutenberg-Bibel (W3)

Die "42zeilige lateinische Bibel" (auch "Gutenberg-Bibel" und "B42" genannt) ist das erste im Abendland mit beweglichen gegossenen Typen gedruckte repräsentative Buch und zugleich das einzige Druckwerk, das mit Sicherheit von Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz gedruckt wurde. Diese von 1452 bis 1455 gedruckte (spätestens im Frühjahr 1456 vollendete) Bibel, die früheste gedruckte Bibel überhaupt, besteht aus zwei Bänden, dem Alten und Neuen Testament, und umfaßt 1282 Folioseiten. Der Text der Vulgata ist in zwei Kolumnen (zunächst für einige wenige Seiten zu 40 Zeilen, dann in 41 Zeilen und schließlich in 42 Zeilen) gesetzt; für Buch- und Schriftgestaltung war die zeitgenössische Prachthandschrift das Vorbild. Von den etwa 180 gedruckten Exemplaren der B42 sind heute nur noch 48, teilweise fragmentierte Exemplare (12 davon auf Pergament und 36 auf Papier) erhalten.

Sunday 10 October, 2010 was that most auspicious of days, 42 Day. Below you'll find all you need to know about this extraordinary number.

42, also written as forty-two, is a number that, if you are counting correctly, comes after 41 and before 43. It is made of two digits, both of which are even numbers. 42 is also an integer and natural number. For some inexplicable reason, a lot of nerdy people are obsessed with 42. It seems they have nothing better to do than to think up all sorts of cultural, scientific or religious significance of the number, when, as a matter of fact, it has no particular significance whatsoever because it is a perfectly ordinary number, much like 27, 53 or even 74.

All this trouble started when Douglas Adams wrote a radio series/book/TV series/movie called "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", in which a giant super-computer, named "Deep Thought", was built to figure out "the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything". It was "42". This was rather confusing, mostly because people didn't even know what the proper question was. Eventually, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect found out that the question seemed to be 'what do you get when you multiply six by nine', which is actually 54.

The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do'. I typed it out. End of story

Though there has been much debate, Douglas Adams insisted there was no symbolic reason he decided to use 42. Eventually, people realised that 6x9 actually does equal 42 in base 13. Douglas said he didn't know about this at the time, saying 'you don't write jokes in base 13'. Coincidentally, Douglas was 42 years old - base 10 - when his daughter, Polly, was born. His h2g2 Researcher number is U42.

"Mazarinen", eine Art Gebacknes, das auf folgende Weise bereitet wird. Man nimmt ein halb Pund süße Mandeln, brühet sie ab, stößt sie klein, thut sie in einen Reibenapf mit ein wenig Rosenwasser; und reibet sie mit der hölzernen Keule, und thut dazu ein halb Pfund geriebenen Zucker. Nimmt dann ein halb Pfund Rindermark, schneidet selbiges klein, thut es dazu und rühret es wohl; dann thut man dazu 2 ganze Eyer und von 4 Eyern das Gelbe und rühret es wieder wohl. In der Zeit, da dieses gerühret wird, machet man einen Teig von einem halben Pfunde feinen Weitzenmehls, einem halben Pfunde ausgewaschener Butter und etwas Wasser, rollet selbigen dünn aus und leget ihn in die Tortenförmchen, oder in Ermangelung derer in kleine Pastetenformen; leget von der Vermengung darein, bedeckt dieses mit ganz dünn geschnittenem Citronat, bestreichet den Teig an dem Rande herum mit dem Gelben von Eyern, und leget dann einen Deckel von dem Teig darüber, drücket selbigen am Rande herum an den untersten Teig, bestreichet sie mit geschlagenem Gelben von Eyern, backet sie in der Tortenpfanne und gibt sie warm zu Tische.

"Torte à la Mazarin". Man mache von Blätterteig, den man aber mehrere Male wieder zusammendrückt, daß er nicht blättert, einen dünnen Boden auf einer Schüssel, und einen krausen Rand darum; hierauf 1/2 Pfund süße Mandeln, worunter einige bittere seyn können, abblanchirt und fein zerstoßen. Man rühre nun in einem Reibenapfe 3/4 Pfund fein zerstoßenen und gesiebten Zucker mit dem Gelben von 12 Eyern und etwas Citronenzucker drei Viertelstunden, thue etwas zerstoßenen Zimmet und Muskatennuß dazu, auch zwei Eßlöffel voll Orangenblütwasser, und zuletzt den Schnee von dem Weißen von 12 Eyern. Man lasse es auf der mit Teig belegten Schüssel eine Viertelstunde langsam backen. Wenn sie gahr ist, wird 1/4 Pfund zerstoßener Zucker mit Marasquin klar gerührt, über die Torte gegossen, und langsam im Ofen getrocknet, damit es so klar, wie ein Spiegel werde. Den Rand von der Torte kann man mit Schnee von Eyweiß und Filets von Mandeln, stark mit Zucker bestreut, glasuren, ehe man den Guß über den Kuchen macht.

Dr. Martin Nowak, ein Augenarzt aus Michelfeld, hat die Zahl (2^25.964.951)-1 mit dem GIMPS-Mersenne-Programm auf einem seiner Praxiscomputer als prim nachgewiesen. Die Zahl besitzt 7.816.230 Dezimalziffern. Insgesamt 24 PCs arbeiten im Augenzentrum des Arztes in ihrer "Freizeit" für das Internet-Projekt GIMPS. Ein 16-fach-Itanium-2-System (Bull NovaScale 5000 HPC) brauchte nur fünf Tage, um die Primalität der nunmehr 42. bekannten Mersenne-Primzahl zu bestätigen.
